So now it seems Google is looking to introduce its search technology to users’ desktops. Brilliant. For once a company is starting to understand what it takes to go head-to-head and beat Microsoft. Instead of waiting around and becoming the next Netscape, as this article so pitifully tries to assume, Google is taking the battle to Microsoft land. And you know what? Microsoft can’t do anything about for at least another 2-5 years.
Microsoft Longhorn delays show that true integrated search technology will not be available till 2009. Google’s integrated desktop search technology looks to be ready now in 2004. Five year headstart is a pretty good advantage. Microsoft’s model does not allow for quick innovation as can be seen with Google or Linux.
Microsoft’s model runs on the fact that they need you to purchase their software to make money. Google’s model revolves around their ability to quickly provide information to end users from any platform. Microsoft needs users to use their products to survive. Google just needs people to use the Web. Google could make all of their stuff available for Windows, Mac OSX, and Linux. We all know that Microsoft isn’t touching Linux with a 10 foot pole.
Microsoft’s innovation cycle has gotten longer and longer over the last couple of years. With Longhorn they are helping every one of their competitors by taking as long as possible. Don’t think Linux desktop market will improve somewhat in the next 5 years? Imagine a Google Linux with integrated search technology and other features that use Google’s technology. Froogle, Blogger, Google News, the list will continue to grow and couple all of that with OpenOffice and Gnome/KDE and you are beginning to look at Linux Longhorn.
So far Google has been the one making all the right moves and avoiding the mistakes of past competitors that fell under the mighty Microsoft hand. Let’s hope that they continue innovating and staying a couple years ahead of Microsoft. However, let’s also hope that they do not decide to act like the next Microsoft.
