Techdirt has recently written a very informative article that exemplifies how the MPAA distorts, or simply makes up new numbers, or rates, of piracy, depending on how convenient it is for them.
the MPAA kept claiming (without any evidence) that Canada was a hotbed of this activity — accounting for approximately 50% of camcorded movies. However, now the same movie industry is claiming that New York City is responsible for 40% of camcorded movies
In that case, according to MPAA’s numbers, only 10% of the camcorded movies are recorded outside of Canada or New York City. As ridiculous as those numbers might be, NY has upgraded the past fine for people caught recording movies. Instead of a $250 fine, you will now have to pay $5000 and get up to 6 months in jail.
I don’t know about you readers, but if I were a New Yorker, I would certainly stop going to the theaters.
