LifeHacker has a special article up where they give simple instructions on changing the settings of a Linksys WRT54GL Wireless router so that it performs much better than the stock configuration.
After a relatively simple firmware upgrade, you can boost your wireless signal, prioritize what programs get your precious bandwidth, and do lots of other simple or potentially much more complicated things to improve your computing experience.

1I have done this using the sveasoft software, and it works great. I used it mainly for the QoS.
I wanted to make sure that our VoIP packets were not affected by the traffic for the web server that we host internally.
