As if Microsoft’s console didn’t already have a wide range of problems, like overheating, or disk recognition issues. It appears that some models, mainly the ones built in December 2006, damage your disks. A Dutch consumer advocacy show recently made the issue public by showing in a video that the console really does scratch the disks.
Joystiq contacted Microsoft about the issue and received the following statement:
“Due to the fact that we did not participate in the experiment done by Kassa and have little insight into the methodology that was used, we cannot comment specifically on the outcome. While we are aware that discs can potentially be scratched through normal wear and tear, we have not received any widespread reports of the issue highlighted here. There are millions of Xbox consoles in use today and we know that the majority of our customers are having a great gaming experience. That said, it is important to us that all of our customers have the best gaming experiences possible, and these claims are obviously very concerning to us. We encourage any Xbox customer who believes that their discs have been scratched in the same manner as identified by KASSA, to contact us at www.xbox.com/support or 1-800-4-MY-XBOX for additional information. We will examine the console and make appropriate repairs if necessary in order to restore the console to full working order, as well as provide customers with information on how to obtain replacement discs should they need them.”
Looks like the price difference between the XBox and the Playstation is looking less attractive, at least in my eyes. I don’t mind paying a bit extra if the console is, at the very least reliable, and the XBox 360 has a track record of these defects.

1Ok this was the very first defect found in Dec 2006. How is this new news? This was problem already addressed by Microsoft. Granted i’m not a great MS fan myself, but this article is nothing more then a PS3 promotion.
Stupid article. “Don’t buy the new version of XXX product, because the first generation had a problem” . Isn’t that like saying “Don’t buy Ford F150, because the Model T had problems”?

2I agree, this is old news and the disks are damaged when you tilt the machine while running. The solution is simple, it is not a walkman. Leave the machine where it is and don’t move it while playing a game. With the included wireless controller you can’t even claim the dog tripped over the cord….
