Well, it was bound to happen after the amazing success of the Transformers live action movie. New Regency is nearing a deal with the Mark Gordon Co. to adapt Voltron: Defender of the Universe into a live-action film according to Variety.
If you’re a Voltron fan you’re not going to like this next part…
If the deal closes the plot for the film will be as follows: “a post-apocalyptic tale set in New York City and Mexico. Five ragtag survivors of an alien attack band together and end up piloting the five lion-shaped robots that combine and form the massive sword-wielding Voltron that helps battle Earth’s invaders.”
Now, anyone even remotely familiar with the property is well aware that this plot has abosultey NOTHING to do with the plot of Voltron - which is the story of 5 space explorers sent to the conquered planet of Aris, join forces with a Princess and find the 5 keys to the Voltron lions that allow them to form the mighty robot to defend the planet from the forces of Zarkon and his robeasts.
If they’re going to completely abandon the core ideas and locations of this movie, should they make it?
Of course, this is still so early in the process that just about everything could change, but expect to see Voltron in a theater sooner rather than later.
How these guys miss the concept of “Star Wars meets Transformers” I’ll never know…

2This sounds closer to the plot of the original anime that Voltron is based on.
In the original, it’s not planet Aris, it’s earth that they travel to.
It’s earth that’s been ravaged by an alien attack.
Oh, and Sven is dead :P

3I knew Sven died, but I’ve never been able to find much more information about Go Lion. I’d be very interested in reading more about it.

4With any luck, the Voltron DVD sales will be good enough for Media Blasters to release Go Lion.
It was in the works, I’m just waiting for the official confirmation. :)

5What Bill said.
Remember the Transformers movie wasn’t *exactly* canon with the cartoon series, and it still kicked ass. I think this will be awesome!

6But I’d still appreciate it if the Princess would pilot the Blue Lion. I mean, come on, how often do you see a girl assigned to the blue uniform/partial robot/jewel/power whatever? :D And yeah, I liked the plotline where that came from. Definitely takes me back.

7Never seen the cartoon but I did own the toy of that robot.
Traded it for some A-Team walki talkies to the kid who lived next door if I remember.

8I’ve read the movie script first hand and I must say that it’s better than I expected but not as good as I had hoped.
The current reviews on LatinoReview.com and Chud.com really don’t do a good job and explaining the film. Most of their reviews are just hype that leaves the reader wondering what the heck is going on.
I’ve posted a full review (almost 15 pages in MS Word) on my website that explains the story and characters, using direct quotes from the script itself. The address for the review is http://www.geocities.com/kiethblacklion/Scriptreview.html
The review is full of spoilers so unlessyou want to know what’s going on, don’t read it.
