MAX Media Player for DS

At the heart of MAX Media Player for DS is Datel’s exclusive MAX Media Player. Just insert the cartridge into your DS’s game slot, and boot up our fully featured browser. From here, you can play your MP3 audio tracks, watch videos and view your JPEGs on your DS’s screen. You can even use the browser to activate executable programs!

1This looked great… until I saw the price tag. 129L = $225! With DS itself at $100, the total package is $325.
Steve Jobs described the video capability on ipod as just “something extra”, meaning video on a 2.5″ screen is not a major selling point: And certainly not $225 extra! Nintendo DS has a slightly bigger screen(3″) but lower resolution and smaller hd on the add-on unit: I don’t think it’s worth $225 to watch video on it.

2I’ve seen it for $179… and this is what tips the scale for me. While I was impressed with the PSP, I don’t think I would spend over $150 on a handheld… so naturally the Nintendo DS was the next logical choice. But seeing that PSP had all these neat gadgets I felt DS was limited just to games. Now I know that Nintendo DS is fully as capable. It is also better-suited for other functions with it’s innovative dual screen. Man oh man I love Datel…

3I’ve got a pass me2 and a CF adaptor with a 4 gig Compact Flash card. With that combo you can play DS homebrew, DS game roms, watch videos and play MP3’s etc. All with no chance of skipping as its solid state. Id recommend this combo over the MAX player any day.

4I always knew Nintendo DS was the best. Now with MAX media Player. But if they keep that price Nintendo DS is going to go down in the stocks. The cheaper it is the more people will buy it.

6Ok I looked at all the pics of this but if you look closely youll see that it plugs in to the game boy advanced port. Witch is bad because if you have have the vids of sponge bob and others the graphics suck. Also the pixls are off. Like youll watch it and youll see red or green little squars. Witch is where the pixls are. I am just saying that you need to check before you buy.

i am not sure what u r saying with the whole spongebob thing but the video quality is actually very gd, i am not going to say that it is better that the psp (graphic wise)but it is pretty good considering the size of the ds screen, the other great thing about this is the control panel thingy with the touch screen, it easy to control and has like a windows media player touch to it.this thing seem to be tight, but i havent tested it to it full capacity but so far …….oh and you can get is for $169 at divenio

9Never mind the sponge bob thing. So have you actually seen it play or only the pics? Because the pics are edited there not pics of it actually playing. If so is it worth buying?

17Hey u guys check this out you bought your ds now a lot of people are this max media player. Adding it all up your paying more for the max media player than the ds. WoW. And adding it all up your paying more than the psp is now so think about it before you buy it!!!!

The PSP isn’t much use by itself. It only comes with a dinky 32 MB memory card. In order to actually get use from its media capabilities, you have to put up money for storage. Even a 1 gig memory stick will match the DS+HD combo in price. Think about that before posting price logic. And learn to punctuate properly.
BTW, what’s a pass me2 (I couldn’t find much on Google) and what kind of price does this setup come at? It’s intriguing me with its promise of CompactFlash RAM.

24Woah! You guys really shouldn’t be ranting all this junk about it sucking or ruling if you don’t really know much about it. Sure it looks cool and sure it costs a lot put if you go to Datels homepage (www.codejunkies.com) you’ll see that there is cheaper versions like the 1GB,2GB and the 4GB. Also don’t complain or say something is cool if you don;t even know what a .exe file is or what HDD stands for! Come on I’m 14 and I know this stuff.

25Also I don’t believe there is a way to convert N64 games into NDS ROMs, yet. There is a possibility but I haven’t check lately. If there is, sure it would be cool to play on the DS itself but I don’t see how well the control method would be…But I know for a fact that NES, SNES, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, GBA, Genesis, and MAME (arcade) can all be encoded into .nds files also knows as Nintendo DS roms.

31that picture is a lie. watching movies gives you 2 options, stop and pause. and it has a progress bar that you can’t even scroll. it cant play .gba files which would be any homebrew gba game or app. its largely worthless. and yes i have it.i shelled out $90 for it (well, more like $78 after my employee discount) and it is not worth it

33So this max media is the same as the walmart version i just want to make sure cuz i want it too. can you but in Compact flash cards as well as the hard drive in the one your describing above? 34Can anyone tell me what kind of flash cards it runes on, i Only got the dock and starter which was $30 and im not going to spend money on ones that I can’t use.
Oh and on the n64 note it doesn’t matter on what the rom is, it’s the emulator that has to be up to ds/ lite speed.
Because when ever they come out w/ a ds compatable emulator for the MMP i will play Turok alot.
I would like to know this info by a decent time.

36I bought one of these at Best Buy for just over $30 bucks. I slapped a 1GB Compact Flash card into it (it’ll take up to an 8GB CF card)and put SCUMMVM onto it. Now I can play games that have been screaming to be ported to the DS like “Maniac Mansion”, “Sam & Max Hit the Road” and, “The Dig”. Yeah, the video player is a letdown, but it works and hopefully homebrewers will put something better out there for it. It’s totally worth it to me though for ‘Sam & Max’ alone.

38Don’t get the Max Media Dock. I bought one and spent about 100 bucks total. It’s a rip off because of really low homebrew support, bad video quality, sticks out, and sound quality sucks. Datel is a rip-off.

42got one of these for the kids DS, works quite well now with the newer software, gor mine on ebay without flash card for £20 (~$35) picked up 2 gig CF for another £10.
works well with most converted vids and mp3s. Dont expect miracles, the DS screen is small but for cartoons in the car its ideal.
Also dont get the Flash drive versions, get a good x50+ speed compact flash, the high data transfer allows the ROMs to run more efficently. I used a generic Flash card i had for an old camera and while it was fine for movies and music, it couldnt cut it for the commercial backup ROMs. The faster flash card could though.

43This thing is a big disappointment. I got one to test out some homebrew apps and to attempt to run some of my backed up commercial roms. I was getting really pissed at myself because I knew that the applications that I was trying to run were properly installed and should be working, based on Datels’ aggressive advertising that this device could support GBA and NDS files, playback media (at a shitty bit rate, stereo output fails on most my mp3’s and the video decoding blows). I can’t connect to most WiFi connections, only once have I actually gotten wifi to work when running my backed up rom of MarioKart, however, it will only load half the time when attempted and I’d have to format my CF card and reload everything again. It is not compatible with Chishms Fat drivers, it won’t load any OS emulators like DS Linux or Mini vMac… hell, I’m surprise these assholes haven’t been sued yet. Spend a little time researching before you buy and I’d advise against this product. Its definitely cheap and thats what you’ll get. If you already have bought one and are now on the same issues that I’ve been though, run a search on google for the petition.com petition being sent to Datel demanding they fulfill their advertisement and allow the homebrew support they boast.

44Picked this up for $10 on clearance, plus shelled out $8 for a 2GB CF card. Some ROMs work, some apps work. A big PITA to work with, as some homebrew does not work, as they will attempt to load but not run. The video player has a cruddy frame rate, the DAP function has some serious artifacting, and knowing Datel, they could do better - but never enough.
At least the CF card will have other uses. But I may pick up its competition in the near future.
