Yesterday I picked up two Nintendo DS systems (not easy to find down here in Tampa) and the first thing I did was open one up and charge it up so I could get back to work…
Well when the charge was done instead of trying to play the Metroid demo or Mario64, I decided it was time to get closer to the ending of Advance Wars 2 (both 1 and 2 are must-haves if you don’t have them already). So I stuck the GBA cart in and really wasn’t expecting anything different, but there was a rumor on the web that GBA games just looked better on the DS.
After configuring the system the game started up and to say the least I am nothing short of amazed. The screen is backlit in contrast to the GBA SP which uses front lighting and this makes a huge difference in picture quality. The colors are more vibrant and the screen seems to jump out at you more.
Sound wise this is like a mini-stereo system in your hands. It takes portable gaming sound to the next five levels. The sounds was loud and crisp. It could get too loud if you are not careful. Glad they had the sense to include a headphone socket.
So now my poor GBA SP will never get touched again because the new DS simply provides a better experience head-to-head when playing the same games. Even though the launch titles for the DS are unimpressive, it wouldn’t hurt you to get one now and enjoy the many fine titles that the GBA line offers.

1Have you played long enough to have a feel for the battery life yet?

2No, I played with still plugged into the outlet. Won’t have time to move around with it until Thursday. I need an excuse to ignore the relatives.

3Oh. I think I’ll wait to buy it until there are some good games out. Or I’ll just get it free from the thing.

6does the battle field look any diff on the ds in comparasen to the GBA? becuase i heard that you see you planes on the top screen and you gound units on the bottom. also is the digigal pad really just for bottons or is it a cross between a digital and anolg. my brother said they would probobly have a digital anolog so you could have 3-D movement and compactness.

7Toby, you’ll only see the 2 screens when the DS version of Advance Wars comes out. The GBA version will use one screen and function exactly like it does on the GBA.

9It should be noted that the DS will play GBA games, but nothing older. No Game Boy, no Game Boy Color. Also, since there’s no multiplayer connection port for your GBA cable, no more multiplayer GBA games, aside from Wario Ware’s one-GBA multiplayer stuff where one person uses L and one person uses R.
While it uses Nintendo’s proprietary protocol for wireless as well as WiFi, it won’t support any of the wireless GBA games (such as Pokémon FireRed/LeafGreen or Mario Golf Advance) either.
If you don’t do multiplayer, it’s a perfect replacement for your GBA. However, because I still love a good round of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance with a friend, I’ll be keeping my GBA. Oh yeah, also, I’ll be keeping my GBA for Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles and for Four Swords Adventure, since you can’t use the DS with the GBA/GC link cable.
