According to Innerbits after Sony settled with Immersion, who sued them because a patent violation regarding the controller’s rumble feature, they have been working on two prototypes for the past couple of months.
We can now confirm that this is the case. We’ve heard from two independent sources at Sony that they have been working on prototypes for several months. Officially, the corporate line is still “no comment”. Unofficially, Sony is facing some difficulties with battery life; i.e. Between the rumble and the wireless support, the batteries are draining too fast to be acceptable for consumers.
I don’t understand why Sony is having difficulties with battery life, considering that the Wii controller has more sensors, can power an external add-on and even has a small speaker. I recommend that they get their act together really soon, and release a proper PS3 controller with rumble, and hopefully, a new mainstream design instead of the “poor” one the console has.
And yes readers, I was a fan of their boomerang controller.

1What’s with wanting rumble anyway, such a gimmick, added nothing to the gameplay experience for me personally on my PS2. If it shook my whole body and lounge room that would be cool… but as it is … lame

2The PS3 controller has a huge battery life. Comparing it to the Wii is a bit silly as My Wii contollers don’t last a third of the time. This is what Sony are obviously trying to avoid as it irritatels the hell out of me.
