I hate the format war. I hated the DVD/Divx war, and I’m hating the HD-DVD/Blu Ray war even more. I want to upgrade to High Def disks for my DVD collection, but I’ll be damned if I’m going to choose one of these formats.
Drew posted earlier today about Microsoft announcing a price drop on the HD-DVD drive for the Xbox 360. Which is good for HD-DVD. Today Target announced that they will only be stocking Blu-Ray players in their stores. Which is good for Blu-Ray. It’s not a HUGE win for Blu-Ray, though, with Target still selling HD-DVD players online. Plus they’ll still be selling HD-DVD disks, and the Xbox 360 HD-DVD add-on. Target even went on record to say that they haven’t chosen a side. “We are not proclaiming one format vs. the other as the preferred consumer technology.”
My money is still on HD-DVD because of Wal-mart and Porn. We’ll see what happens.

1Many Blu Ray discs have region coding.
I live in the UK and import mostly US discs, so unless I want to wait months (sometimes years) to watch a movie I have to stick to HD-DVD or go a less legal route for HD video.

2Seriously, why is porn always brought up as the downfall of BluRay, it’s so stupid.
BluRay never shunned porn that was a complete rumor. One porn company just one had trouble getting a BluRay manufacturing company make their disks. Since then porn, yes porn, has been released on BluRay, including a few of the biggest named porn titles. The porn industry never chose HDDVD as BluRay is releasing porn as we speak, and has in the past. One company spoke out and the HDDVD rabid have used it as the excuse as to why BluRay will fail, despite BluRay having non stop good news and far more backers and far better sales.
Second, porn will NOT decide this war. Porn is downloaded now, back then porn was the downfall of BETAMAX because there was no internet, you had to go to the movies to see porn at that point. Things are very very different now. Even if those rumors that have been proven false were true and porn did go HDDVD only which it hasn’t, Blockbuster only putting Blu-Ray movies in future stores, Target putting BluRay endcaps, Woolsworth going Blu-Ray exclusive which is huge in UK, BluRay selling 3-4 to 1 over HD-DVD, and now 4 million Blu-Ray capable PS3’s out there is much much more groundbreaking news.
Wishing for BluRay to lose just because Sony backs it is getting sad and funny, and that Sony hate is all the tooth and nail HDDVD backers have anymore. HDDVD is selling so poorly now that some stores are pulling it from shelves altogether and going BluRay only, and that is indeed a fact. Maybe not as many as are selling both, but its growing constantly. Also HDDVDs biggest ammo was proven a rumor as WalMart denied that they were producing cheap HDDVD players, they just said that they were looking at what the price would be. They even sell BluRay titles so HDDVD has no exclusive backers while BluRay does, BluRay sells better, BluRay has similar quality, better sound, java coming out for more features, and far more space, and rapidly falling prices, and more companies backing it like FOX and DISNEY.
Why root for HDDVD when it has no advantage and is selling very badly, the only reason is because people hate Sony and wish for the war to drag on. BluRay is near a win, the sooner it wins the sooner people can move on to the new format without worrying about buying a dud. HDDVD would be a miracle, supporting it if you dont own it at this point is just saying you want the horse with the bad leg in the bad race to win because you dont like the name of the horse winning the race.
