Eurogamer has recently put together an excellent article explaining how the Playstation 3’s online platform works, what you can do with it, and what you can expect in the future.
In short, this is what you can expect:
Despite what the current trend is (to be against Sony), I think that this is a sign of good news for everyone alike. For the first time, all of the three major consoles were built with online communities in mind (sure, all of the current gen consoles had online functionalities at one point or another but not as well implemented as these ones).
Even though I have a small crush for the Wii, and it’s the console I’m most anxious to say, I have to admit that Sony’s online platform seems more attractive right now than the XBox Live service.

1While the Sony and Nintendo online functionality is going to be cool, these guys are basically just copying what Microsoft did with the 360 and original Xbox a few years ago, and maybe adding a few bells and whistles. I just hope they don’t call it “Sony Live” that would be too obvious.
I still don’t get the whole Web Browser / Photo capabilities, who wants to do that with their gaming console? PC anyone?

2The reason I said that is because it seems that it will pack all the functionality of the XBox Live service, however, it will be entirely free.
And if the XBox Live service works very well why shouldn’t other companies copy it?
You seem to forget that the XBox Live concept isn’t original either, many people compared the service to Gamespy Arcade when the XBox came out, and with good reasons to do so I might add.

3I agree with Marco, if it works keep doing it!
Wait, where is the innovation?
