How to get a job as a Linux administrator

If you ask Scot Melland, it’s a good time to be a Linux professional. IT jobs across the board are picking up, but Melland, the CEO of Internet career site Dice, says Linux knowledge is a particularly hot commodity. Job postings on Dice for Linux professionals are multiplying at a much faster rate than any other skill set.

Funny thing is I have never met a real-life, paid Linux adminstrator in my life. Glad to see it is picking up. I was always thinking about becoming one, but finding that job a couple of years ago was a task even too great for me.

yeah… I know plenty of MS administrators and a few Novell administrators, but not a single linux one. But then, we don’t use linux much here, so there’s no reason I would….

I started seeing a lot of other national governments switching to Linux. Brazil and Germany for example. Then Home Depot makes the switch, I figure that with the increasing cost of Windows licensing and the constantly increasing dependency on computers, Windows shops will got RedHat, Fedora, or Mandriva and Novell/Windows shops will go SuSE. I’ve been learning Linux since February. The funny thing is that Windows Admins are relatively elementary in skill as compared to Linux admins. In fact my newly acquired Linux skills have made me a more effective Windows guy. Go figure.
