Extreme Tech has an article talking about what kind of computers will run Windows Vista in all its Aero glass wonderfulness.
When I worked at a computer store, I had people asking me if a computer or laptop would run Windows Vista just fine, and while it was easy to say yes, since Microsoft has said that Windows Vista will be able to step down its usage to run on weaker systems, it would not be the full experience.
Many people did not realize that Microsoft’s Aero Glass was going to have some hefty requirements when it came out, to be used at full power. Read on for details on just the video card that would be required:
According to Microsoft, the minimum requirement for the full Aero Glass experience is a DirectX 9 capable GPU with 64MB of video memory. That’s a little deceptive. If you’re anything like me, you’ll often have several dozen windows open, which eats into graphics memory. You’ll also want lots of graphics memory bandwidth. So a PCIe x16 graphics card with at least 128MB of RAM becomes de rigueur. Microsoft is suggesting that 256MB of graphics memory would be optimal. So it’s a good thing that we’re starting to see graphics card with 512MB of RAM.
Do you need a high-performance card, like a GeForce 7800 GTX or ATI Radeon X1800 XT if you’re not into PC gaming? Probably not. A strong midrange card, like the GeForce 6800 GS or ATI Radeon X1600 XT will yield good system responsiveness.
And I thought that upgrading from a Sapphire 9200 SE to an ATI AIW 9600XT would be good enough to last me the next two or three years with my almost non-existant PC gaming. Should be interesting to see if a machine like mine can get the full Aero Glass experience without eating all my system resources.

1So I take it that every box of Windows Vista will come packed with new graphics cards, and more memory modules, so the end user doesn’t have to fork out MORE money?
haha…in bizarro world

2Of course they will, because Microsoft is always very giving with their software, just like I am sure that every Windows Vista package will only be $10. (but you will have to use all of their Live software package, forever!)

3Bah. Well the Macsboyz were always able to take advantage of accelerated graphics since most had no choice since it came integrated with their Macs right? Or was the graphics card optional? (I wouldn’t know). With Intel releasing their 9xx chipset, people finally have an onboard graphics option that is DX9 compliant and so can actually have some acceleration by default (albeit, heavily restricted). Yes, yes I know Nvidia and ATI have their own integrated solutions, but that’s peanuts compared to the juggernaught that’s Intel.
But the point is, if people WANT the Aero experience they can shell out the cash and get a new card with 256MB onboard memory. If they don’t give a crap, then they can live with a new interface but without all the candy, and I know that’s where most people will lie, from the commandline die-hards forced to live in a Windows world to the n00b who’ll be lost if a menu changed color.
Personally, I know I want all the candy I can get…esp if my video card is going to be used to handle all those chores, allowing the CPU & RAM be free to run apps, instead of the GUI. I mean the graphics card does jack shit when you’re in Windows otherwise….it’s a massive resource that’s not being used currently.
Now if you have a mediocre system and you try to run Aero…well d’oh you’re gonna crash and burn buddy. And by mediocre, I mean a card that has less than 256MB of RAM. It’ll be interesting to see how well the final version of Vista will perform.

4So the new MS OS is taking advantage of the newer technology and gives the users option of scaling down the graphics if they don’t have the necessary hardware? I’m not exactly a MS fanboy, but I don’t see anything wrong with this.

5i believe that Microsoft Vista will be a huge change for the computer world. its about time that i see something new because windows xp was starting to get boring after 5 years! since vista is so demanding i believe that everyone will be having beter systems because the companies will have to make better ram, video cards etc… just to keep up with technology, so the prices will lower on some of the “top” items now and everyone wont have a problem sporting 2 gigs of ram in their rigs.. and besides ALOT of people already have at least 1 gig of ram and a 256mb video card.

10Although Vista graphics requirements are too high, the good thing is that there are a plenty of sub-$100 video cards with 256MB (both PCIe and AGP), capable to run Aero.
However, for people looking for 3D desktop eye candies without upgrade of old hardware, there are a lot of Linux distributions with Aero-like rotating and flipping windows.
