I try to steer towards comics, sci-fi, and other fun stuff in my postings as much as possible, but our sister blog Tech SoapBox has posted an interesting article that I think you should take a look at.

What is interesting about this article, particularly if you are a user of the popular social bookmarking site Digg, is how it points out how “focus groups” with a particular agenda are capable of spreading their opinions on the site. Be it political (as mentioned in the post) or simply to promote a product or brand that they like, these mobs on digg are increasingly a problem that Digg will face for the rest of it’s life.

There is nothing in this world that I dislike more than spreading “hate” be it towards ones religion, gender, sexual preference, or skin color. To tie this back into general geekery, it is this one problem that we seem to have as a human race that keeps us from taking those necessary steps into that future that Gene Roddenberry imagined.

I am a strong believer that a version of that future (where mankind can work together) is possible…but it looks like we’re still a ways off…
