Sometimes you being to wonder 3 things (trust me you will one day):
This article kind of fell under all three categories (although much less for #2). I am glad to see one of the big dogs saying we should not bring another Windows clone to the world, but did it take till 2004 for someone who is part of a Linux company to understand that (yes Novell is a Linux company now)?
Many times I have read online that some people believe the way to lure Windows users is by creating a better Windows desktop. Why would anyone switch to another platform that offered nothing new? There are headaches to switching over to Linux no matter what people like to say and if I am comfortable with Windows I have no reason to switch over to another Windows.
Its free you say. I already paid for Windows and it is on my desktop so free means nothing to me. I will get the next Windows when I buy a new computer. I have no reason to switch over.
Viruses are no longer an issue because I have been taught and understand when I should and should not open attachments and I have a virus scanner on my computer that protects me from harm.
I have installed one of those wireless routers on my home network that come with a firewall so even though I am not fully secure I should be alright.
I have no reason to switch to another Windows.
For Linux businesses to succeed they have to gain enterprise penetration and offer something new to the table. People use the computers at work, they bring that knowledge home. If Linux is better than Windows then do not waste your time writing another Windows. Do what Apple did and try to innovate. Find your strengths and the competitor’s weaknesses and go after them.
Heh after writing this short little piece I feel like:
But you already knew that.
This was mostly written from a “normal” user’s perspective so please avoid flaming me. I know those wireless routers do not offer great security by default…
