There are discussion boards and then there is Gaia Online. One of the largest forums in the world (running on Open Source software no less) is home to a wonderful community, but that is not what makes this site so special. What makes it special is the RPG elements within the site. You develop your own customized avatar and participate in the community to earn gold. This gold can go towards buying items and clothing for your avatar.
You are also given the ability to trade items with other members. Overall, it makes for an addicting experience.

1Oh, yah, Lanzer’s pretty crazy knowledgeable. For a place that’s so busy, it moves pretty zippy.
A little geek community story (or should I say: The internet is a small, small world):
Once upon a time, there was a community called the FAHQ (Fan Artist Headquarters). It used to be small, and made of artists in their early to late teens and early twenties: all aspiring to be comic book artists, writers, illustrators, or animators some day. They were full of dreams, but mostly still in school. It had started off as a directory, which exploded into more. Add a little forum and chatroom, and voila–instant community.
Fast forward to now. FAHQ has been defunct for a few years now (Inside joke that the height was reached in 1998). However, many “communities” popped up trying to replace it. These communities still had the same people visiting it–however, look how grown up they are! Some of the people can be seen working for Dreamwave and Marvel; some are published in independant publications. Others are in Sheridan College, taking animation, or other colleges taking art courses. Some have become jaded. Strangers became best friends and roomates; some started dating.
Lanzer was/is part of this community, along with many of the artists I’d mentioned above. In fact, most of the official illustrations on Gaia Online are from those artists (notably “Saka” and “L0cke”).
Go-Gaia has become overwhelmed with its popularity, driving the artists that originally graced its presence away. There’s a lot of nostalgia with this group of people, though. They mostly reside in the California Bay Area or Toronto, Canada, but can be found all over the world, including pockets of Malaysia and Singapore. They can also be found in the comic book or anime convention circuits, selling their self-published works, paintings, and illustrations.
I think that it’s mostly a story of how the internet really is one big social network that can really affect life. Oh, yah, I was sort of part of this original community. :-)

2Uh, maybe it’s just me, but I’ve found that Gaia isn’t working. I’ll type in ‘gaiaonline.com’ (like I always do) in the address bar, and it’ll take for-ever- to load, which it never does, and it will say “This page is unavailable.” Did something happen?? Somebody please tell me or help me for that matter!!

6Gaia crashes a lot. It’s no big deal… It only goes down when they’re doing server maintenance, adding stuff, etc - so it doesn’t bother me n.n

9I just checked and it said it had to be refreshed, I hate when this happens especially when there’s people I need to see but in no time it should be up and working again. I hope.

10Yeah. Just when I finally managed to get onto Gaia, a little popup informed me that the system will be down for maintenance until 3:30pm PST… which is now. ~.~ Then again, I guess I don’t have much of a right to complain, since it’s a free game.

18No doubt Gaia is getting updated again, hence it not working. If you check the announcements, after it has been down for sometime, they usually tell you why it was down and what they werer working on. Just give it a bit of time and it’ll be up again.

20Relax, Gaia’s only being mean because it’s the summer months and all of the kids are out of school. ^.^

40Gaia is still in the alpha testing stage, so it’s prone to crash a lot. Especially since they have about 300+ on at pretty much all times…Imagine freewebs under that strain ^^;

41I wish there was some more help on the Gaia site… one time I made an account on Gaia, but it was long ago and now I’ve forgotten the username. Since there’s absolutely nothing there to help one recover a username I had to use an MSN Explorer email I made up. Then.. I… guess I forgot about Gaia for awhile n …hehe… lost that name…

42Er, I thought there was a way to do that. Do you even know your made-up “MSN Explorer” e-mail address? You can probably e-mail a mod/admin or something and they’ll help you out. However, if you didn’t really do anything than perhaps you should just start off a new anyways? O.o? *shrugs*

47Gaia Online is a game i have been hooked on for about a year i think. There was a time after i registered where i didn’t understand RPGs so i didn’t play much but now i have 4 characters and Its a blast. It seems in gaia, that people tend to hang out in one part like me, i like to stay in Barton Town. So that is interesting. Also, with how everyone kept saying it was down, it does that sometimes and sometimes i’ve found that as long as it doesn’t actually say its under maintenance, if you refresh enough, it comes back. It sometimes says something like “The sushi database can not be reached” or something like that… and i hit refresh and its back. But also i believe it is still in the alpha test stage so they are still adding stuff. Gaia Fishing, a flash game, just recently came out and i hear MANY rumors of an upcoming battle system. Already, weapons are coming out such as the staff of angels and the demonic pitchfork. But so faar only as donation gifts.

61Oh a good way to get gold is just to post nonsence, though its alot funner to find a bar or inn (RPing stuff works well) that you like an just become a part of it. I usually get about 2000 gold a day that way

71I love Gaia! My friend showed it to me at the begining of last year (03′) and I got addicted! I know that it crashes a lot but it doesn’t bother me too much. It sucks though, I got so addicted that I was on all the time so my mom wont let me get on the site T_T **shakes fist** Damn. Eh. Hasn’t stoped me so far.

Yea. I see that many people are having problems when Gaia being slow and such. All I know, is that most of the time Gaia works quite well for me. It’s quick, reliable, and though it has its little crashes here and there, it’s all good.
Maybe it’s just my computer. I don’t know.
Yea. Another problem with Gaia is the people. You’ve got your common n00bs, your ignorant flamers, your WITTY flamers, your trollers, etc etc etc…
It’s just like any other forum site… but with more creative ways to express yourself.
There are now Gaia Journals, and houses, and fishing. Eh. I enjoy it. And that’s all that matters to me.

112Gaia is great fun but dont get to in to it. The servers may piss you off when they are down, but they arent as bad as the rude and hateful people that are infesting it.
I used to be a member, but after 2 years of being a Gaia Geek, glitches and assfaces took its toll.
Goodluck to those who still play and are going to start.

138Just a update. I do believe that gaia is going under a complete overhaul so some of those servers no longer work.
I have been a avid member of gaiaonlie.com for almost a year now.
