The problem with reporting this kind of stuff on April Fool’s is that it’s tough to take it too seriously, but then again, Google announced Gmail last year on April Fool’s. In any case, the Uber Geeks are reporting that Google is implementing infinite space on Gmail accounts.
According to the “New Features” page from within Gmail, they are expanding their E-mail storage farm, and as they do, each of the E-mail addresses will receive new space as it becomes available.
Man, when Google goes for the throat, they make sure to go for it hard.
Update: According to Reuters they are upping the ante to 2 Gigs.

1What they are doing is upping the ante at 2 Gb per account, and not excluding (but not announcing concretely) additional storage at some indefinite point in the future. See their announcement for more details.

2My storage has been creeping up since I first saw the announcement last night.

5My gmail is displaying “You are currently using 182 MB (12%) of your 1471 MB.” so I have a 1653MB limit at the moment, aparently.
I wonder if this will stay.

6I don’t think a sudden overload is what they are concerned about. It’s a good ‘hack’, in the sense of a joke for April fools day, to have GMail accounts slowly count upwards to 2GB. I’m sure they’ve already actually allocated more space to the accounts than the counter says at the bottom of the screen.

What’s new on Gmail?
Just launched!
G is for growth
Storage is an important part of email, but that doesn’t mean you should have to worry about it. To celebrate our one-year birthday, we’re giving everyone one more gigabyte. But why stop the party there? Our plan is to continue growing your storage beyond 2GBs by giving you more space as we are able. We know that email will only become more important in people’s lives, and we want Gmail to keep up with our users and their needs. From Gmail, you can expect more.

8In case anyone hasn’t noticed…if you log out of your gmail account and view the homepage, there is a “live” counter in the middle of it counting up how much storage each account has. It’s not just making big jumps :-)

9If you want to fill it up, then join several poular mailing lists (ensure you have filters set up for each, and that they don’t touch the inbox).
I’m also at the 2050 mark now.
