According to this article at C|NET, IBM is encouraging all of its employees to use Firefox as their default browser.
IBM is encouraging its employees to use Firefox, aiding the open-source Web browser’s quest to chip away at Microsoft’s Internet Explorer.
Firefox is already used by about 10 percent of IBM’s staff, or about 30,000 people. Starting Friday, IBM workers can download the browser from internal servers and get support from the company’s help desk staff.
The article goes on to say that this move shows that IBM is making a strong committment to Open Source technology. They feel confident that Firefox will work better with their internal applications because it is based on industry standards, where as Microsoft’s IE uses its proprietary ActiveX to run some programs inside its browser.
I wonder how much this will boost the Firefox download counter.

1Good news! But I wonder if the Firefox DL-counter works from within IBMs LANs/WANs ;-)

2Hmm, I work for IBM in the UK and havent heard much on the grapevine about this, although it would make a nice change to IE, as I use FF at home.
The amount of pop-ups I get at work drives me insane, and thats just light browsing…
Will have to search the Intranet for any word on this.
By the way, if the .exe is located on the Intranet, I dont think its going to show up on the counter. Think of the bandwidth in the first place!

3If you hadn’t already heard, the CEO of Firefox mentioned in an interview that IBM has played a key role in their development life-cycle by contributing resources (including developers) to the Firefox project. You will see IBM listed as a key partner on mozilla’s website (http://www.mozilla.org/foundation/partnerships.html)
Also interesting to note is IBM’s adoption of PHP (http://news.com.com/2100-7344_3-5589559.html) and their plan to provide tools and support to the PHP community.
