If you were looking into getting a piece of Quad processing goodness, then you’ll be happy to hear that Intel has lowered the price in all of it’s Core 2 Quad and Duo processors. In some of them, the difference is almost of 50%.
The Core 2 Duo E4500 2.20 GHz with 2MB 800 Mhz FSB will go on sale for $133 while the E4400 will sell for $113. Which is drop of about $20.
The best deals are in the Core 2 Quad range where the QZ6800 2.93 Ghz Core 2 Quad, 1066 Mhz FSB drops to $999. The Q6700 2.66 Ghz version will now cost $530 and the Q6600 2.40 Ghz version will be $266. In the case of the Q6600 this means cutting the price in half making the chip the only sub-$300 quad-core processor on the market.
Now… I’m certain that one of our readers just purchased his Quad processor X days ago, and to those all I can say is: sorry. But this is how the industry works, prices get lower after a while. And to those that didn’t, even though the Quad processors aren’t that amazing for gaming, yet, it might be a good idea to look into them in a near future.

1/me raises hand.
Friday the 13th in fact. . I probably would have saved $100 in waiting, but oh well, it’s in the case. Now when the optical drive gets here tomorrow (which I thought I ordered, but somehow didn’t), I can finish installing the new hardware and start installing the software. Then I can tear out the stuff from the old computer I want to move over (another optical drive and two hard drives) and get those installed. Then I can copy over the data I want from an old drive, install, reformat and software install for the old computer for the kids to play on.
I’ve been building my computers for decades now, so I’m used to it.
And I’m getting a new optical drive because the HP that’s supposed to do DVD+/-R won’t do DVD-R - even burned!, and the Samsung burner is nice but refuses to recognize any of the CDs that it burns (but it works on every other drive I try them in!). The LG got good reviews, so I’m going to see how that one works out.

2I’ve had a Samsung, a Sony and an Itachi optical drive. All of them still work, and I’ve never had compatibility problems with any of them.
I can’t speak for the HP one, but with the Samsung drive, I think you got a faulty model. Mine worked even with the most modern DVD-R or +R.
