Dean has posted some information on IE7 over on the IE Blog after Bill Gates mentioned it this morning at RSA.
It seems that they will have a working beta of IE7 due out this summer and do have a ship date in mind for the final version, but will not speak about it at this time.
First, some basics: were committing to deliver a new version of Internet Explorer for Windows XP customers. Betas of IE7 will be available this summer. This new release will build on the work we did in Windows XP SP2 and (among other things) go further to defend users from phishing as well as deceptive or malicious software.
They claim they are doing this because they listened to their customers and partners and got the message loud and clear. I have a feeling that what they heard was millions of people installing Firefox (or some other browser that was safer).
The only drawback to current development of IE7 is that they are limiting it to XP SP2 for the time being. They are talking with some of their major Windows 2000 customers and partners, but don’t seem to have made any leaps towards delivering a more secure browsing experience unless you want to fork over the $100 it costs to upgrade to XP.
There is also no mention of incorporating better support for CSS and other Web Standards, which is sad. I mean, if you are going to release a new version of the browser, release a new version. Not a rehashed copy of a browser that is going on 5 years old with an included pop-up blocker.

1Yeah, this is probably the most disappointing announcement this year. Only works on XP SP2. It’s a anti-spyware browswer. Wow.
It seems they are feeling the threat of Firefox and feel the need to release something “new” to everyone so that they stop losing marketshare.

2Interview
M$: We’re comming out with a new browser, IE 0.7, I mean v7.
Reporter: I understand. You were sharing the same standards that would make the current Firefox 1.0.
M$: Anyway, we’ve decided to add some of our newest innovations, such as MSTabBrowse(tm), MSPopBlock(tm), MSExtensions(tm), etc.
Reporter: Weren’t they invented before by someone else?
M&: You want to argue with our lawyers and 200,000 patents? By the way, we’re also going to make this browser more secure.
Reporter: You mean it’s not gonna ship with that Active X BS?
M$: It will, but at least it’s gonna be more user friendly!
Reporter: So it’s going to fully support CSS and PNG?
M$: No, but it’s not like trying to make a better product here. We just need to make it somewhat close to the competition and leave the rest to our marketing team with unlimited funding, monopoly and integration to OS, and the mass of stupid and lazy people who wouldn’t download a product if the one they already have seem *nearly* as good.
Reporter: Sad, but hard to argue with history…

3I just hope they don’t create anymore CSS bugs. I can’t take anymore, lol

4I’m personally glad to see IE7 coming to XP. Even if it is only SP2. But it beats Microsoft’s original plans to only release IE7 with their new version of the Windows Operating System.
