Wired has a great piece written by Gary Wolf where he acts as Microsoft Emplyee Linus Torvalds writing a letter to Bill about the problems Steve is causing with the new Windows desktop/application framework built around Linux.
But the fact is, when Steve goes to a marketing meeting, as he did yesterday, and pronounces our desktop system “Winux,” he jeopardizes not only my personal reputation, but, more important, the very foundation of our business and software approach for the next decade. The desktop system is not “Winux,” as in Linux. As he knows very well. WinX is pronounced like “winks.”
What an imagination he has. Could something like this really be feasible? I guess it could be from a technical standpoint (think KDM and Gnome), but from a profitability standpoint? Especially considering Microsoft’s track record on opening up their code.
