After the recent discovery of the exploit that allows unsigned code to run on any PSP with firmwares 2.0 to 2.8, it was only a (short) matter of time before Sony launched yet another firmware update to fix the exploit, and now it’s here.
Usually, when Sony releases these “security patches”, the only thing that needs to be said is: “if you like your homebrew applications don’t update, if you don’t, you might as well do it”. However, this time, besides fixing a few bugs with some music files, and fixing the PSP so it won’t be exploited, Sony decided to increase the limit of the Memory Stick’s capacity that you use.
Since it’s release, and until now, the limit has always been 4GB, however, with this patch we lose that limit. It’s not confirmed yet whether they removed the limit altogether, or just increased it, however, if you like using your PSP a lot for viewing or hearing media, this latest patch is very tempting.
The word that is out, is that the most recent version of a program that decrypts the Sony PSP’s firmware in order to be able to fully emulate them with DevHook works with this latest firmware. So, although this doesn’t mean that you’ll be able to run Homebrew programs on the new firmware, it does mean that people with 1.50 Firmware will be able to load their PSP with the newest firmware, without installing, and have the ability to run ISO images of UMDs.
As a PSP owner, and media lover, I have to admit that it’s much more tempting to stick with my current firmware, rather than updating. However, if in a near future Sony makes the Memory Stick Duos that have over 4GB capacity affordable, it may cause more users to update. But I’m doubtful that will happen anytime soon, and even when it does come, by that time I’m pretty sure the homebrew community will have discovered a few other exploits by then.
If you don’t care about homebrew at all, you can click here (or go to PSP-Spot very soon and click on the link that corresponds to your PSP’s origin.

1I note the RSS bug introlduced in 2.80 is not yet fixed.
Specifically, indirect RSS feeds are no longer found by the PSP. That is, RSS URLs of the form
http://www.npr.org/rss/podcast.php?id=510070
no longer load.
Other RSS URLs of the form ending with .xml still work.
Please fix this, Sony.

2I bought a 4.0GB Memory Stick from Sandisk for only $120.00 from Sam’s Club.
Thats how much I payed for a 1.0GB stick like 6 months ago.
If you have around $450, you can get 4 4GB memory sticks, and there you have 16GB of easy to use space…
that is so much cheaper than any microdrive or mods you can do to your psp.

3Hey if you have a 1.5. vers. of the PSP and you purchase a 4 GB memory stick, will it work within that version, or does sony need you to update to work within that space?

4As the article states, the previous limit is 4 GB. Only if the stick is LARGER than that need you worry about compatibiity.

6I just brought the psp, planning to homebrew and everything… But had no clues of updates. I went online with my psp and poof… a update to 281. I didn’t even know that psp had an interior hard drive. This ticks me off…

104gb duo sticks on ebay currently go for about $80 total, and retail for about $110. Where in the world can you find duo sticks larger than 4gb? Stick with firmware 1.5, or the recent hacked/patched version of 2.71se from the homebrew community (not the Sony version) that allows you to run homebrew on it.
