If you haven’t noticed already, FG has been redesigned again this month. Thanks to Forty Media for doing the honors. As usual there will be tweaks going on over the next couple of days, but I felt that this was such a huge improvement over the previous version that I had to get it up as soon as possible.

1That’s a lot easier to read and generally more useable. Good work.

2Scrivs, overall, it’s excellent. The only comment I have is that grey on white is slightly harder to read than white on grey, but the content in the middle with panels on either side approach is great, it’s more organized than the old FG. Oh, and why is there a red bar on top? Nothing else on the page is red…seems kinda awkward to me. I notice the display discrepencies between Firefox and IE are basically nonexistent witht he new layout, as opposed to there being a fare share of IE problems with the old layout. Overall, everything looks great. :)

3Eesh, I had a lot of typos in that comment. Shoulda proofread it first. Oh, well. :P

4Josh, the hover on links is the same red along with the titles on the homepage.

5…Shows you how many links I’ve clicked. :P I read FG articles via a Firefox Live (RSS) Bookmark, so I rarely click on links on the actual site, except for when an external site is linked to, and I haven’t had that opportunity because the new layout hasn’t been up very long. And now I notice the article titles are red. I stand corrected. ;)

6It looks good but I think the layout is too wide. Having to scroll left/right is not a good thing.

7Surprise you have to scroll left-to-right Eric. Must be running at a small resolution. This was a conscious decision on my part based on user stats and the content that is provided on the site.

8There’s space left over on 1024×768, and even at 800×600 you can see the left and center columns, and a tiny bit of the right. There shouldn’t be a problem reading content or navigating.
All in all, a wonderful design.

9Oh, there’s so much whitespace… I feel so free.

10I was waiting for you to chime in. I should call this version ‘Swan’.

11I agree, #6, the layout could stand to be a touch less wide. I view all of my web pages and docs on a portrait oriented screen, which i prefer, but sometimes i get stuck moving side to side like a duck who just ate a box of scoth tape. (dont ask)

12I like.

14I’d suggest making the favicon transparent around the circle, just like the logo.

15I like it. It looks nicer than having the two columns on the one side.
The white feels nice, too.

18It’s a bit “heavy” the first time you look at it due to all the links on the left and right columns but given the ammount of content Forty Media had to work with I think this layout is the best they could do.
And as Nicole already said, FG did get a loath of fresh air indeed, and it really needed that foremost.
Usability wise, it’s good, but not great, if you try “tab-navigating” for you to get to the search box you must first go through the left and middle column links, which isn’t very good, but apart from that you can get to all the main links quickly. The site does not validate as transitional, but some of the errors w3c points out are almost impossible to work around, so I’ll give it a 3 out of 5.
But still, a great work was done, congratulations.

19That’s what I call a nice one … ;-)
PS: Did I say I hated the previous one.

20Unfortunately, I have to say I like the old layout better. It was more narrow, easier to grasp in one glance (I’m going left-to-right at 1024×768, like others have said), and less “corporate” in appearance. But, hey, I read via RSS so I can’t really complain.

21Ehm…
To be honest I prefer the previous one.
But maybe I was only used to it.

22I must admit that I liked the previous version better too. The new one is nice, but the older left-aligned one was easier to use with Firefox’s Live Bookmarks (RSS) feature. (Screenshot of current layout at http://tinyurl.com/bpcxx.) Is this was a CSS update, the original layout could be set as an alternative layout — just an idea.

23Well, I was able to edit the CSS locally to remove the left column. Now it’s easier to read entries on the site with my sidebar open! (http://snipurl.com/eju5)
