The world’s leader in terms of LCD manufacturing has unveiled for the first time it’s 8th generation LCDs in the 2007 IMID (International Meeting on Information Display).

Besides having the obligatory huge LCD, which is 70 inches big this time, they also took the opportunity to showcase some of their latest technology developments, like their LED backlight “Local Dimming” which improves contrast ratio a lot. Or more impressive even, their LCDs which run at 120Hz, meaning that the images are refreshed twice as fast as today’s conventional LCDs which operate at 60Hz.

For portable devices they also showcased a high-res 3″ LCD with VGA resolution (that’s smaller than the iPhone’s screen but with a resolution twice as good), and also some e-Paper screens which should supposedly replace books in a near or distant future, or when they become affordable.
