Builder AU has tried to make another stab at the eternal question of why there aren’t more women in IT with its article wondering about what women want in IT.
Women have long been under-represented in the IT industry, especially in senior roles. Is it time to accept that females lack interest in the field, or is lack of support and enduring stereotypes keeping women away? We look at the current state of play in Australia, and find out what the future may hold.
The ideas proposed for why there are fewer women than men in IT are wide and varied from dot-com damage to the geek stereotype. I have to admit that the article annoyed me more than I thought it shed any light on the subject.

1Who cares?! I read an article in TIME that posed a similar question about the fields of Math and Science. But, really, who cares? If woman wanted to get into these jobs and positions I’m sure they would. Perhaps they don’t take an interest in these subjects. The only people that lose out are all the IT, maths and science geeks that are surrounded by men all day! :P

2One of my former bosses is a woman, and a very capable computer engineer. Even though there is a big difference in the male-female ratio, I don’t think it’s much bigger than on other usually male-associated jobs, at least not where I live.

3Few months back, Harvard president Lawrance Summers got seriously burnt for saying that women’s genetic makeup *might* make them less gifted or interested in science. Ultimately, he had to apologize for what he still believed (Galileo anyone?). What the hell is wrong with saying men and women *might* be different? With all this politically correct bs nowadays, I sometimes think there’s more freedom of speech in communist China.
