I have to say, the first time I saw the design for Optimus Prime from the upcoming Live Action Transformers movie…it brought a tear to my eye…and a little vomit to my throat. Of all the designs of Optimus out there over the years, I didn’t think it was possible to completely screw him up…but somehow they did it. It must have taken a committee of a dozen people to screw him up this bad.
Today, however, I really saw just how crappy this movie design is. It’s so bad, that they can’t even make an accurate action figure out of it. Hi Rez pics of a few of the toys can be seen here, but below I have put an image of the CG Optimus and the Toy Optimus together so you can see how significantly different they are.
The legs on the toy are the first thing I notice…they look nothing like the movie version…then the arms…which are completely out of proportion to the legs, giving the toy an Optimus Primal gorilla look. Plus the chest, which looks much more like traditional Optimus on the action figure also looks completely out of scale with the CG counterpart.
Be prepared folks…it’s going to a sucktastic summer to be a Transformers fan.

1In all fairness, the original Transformers from the cartoon were based on the toys. The new movie has reversed this process. CG allows for some MAJOR cheating, but the toys are still bound by the laws of physics. I think they wanted the truck part to look the best, and let the robot part look as good as they could with the constraints of the truck parts.
I’m actually looking forward to the movie. Then again, I’m not one of those whining about Megatron not turning into a pistol for another Decepticon to use (major shrinkage in mass just isn’t plausible, purists!).

3i’ll bet if you compared the two truck versions they won’t look as different.
