Before anyone else has a chance to hawk my all-time favorite anime, I will step up and sing the praises of “Trigun.”
In a desolate post-future landscape, the hunt is on for Vash The Stampede. He is a humanoid typhoon with a $$60,000,000,000 price on his head. Is this man a ruthless criminal, a heartless mercenary, or just a moron?
Based on Yasuhiro Nightow’s manga, this comic adventure takes place in the distant future on a desert planet that looks like the American Old West. Vash wanders from town to town, unsuccessfully pursuing peace, doughnuts, and “the mayfly known as love.” Meryl and Millie follow him, trying to minimize the destruction, but Vash’s only real friend is the gun-totin’ preacher Nicholas Wolfwood. Despite their grudging affection, Wolfwood articulates the other characters’ thoughts when he tells Vash, “When you’re around, things always seem to get worse!”
The old west of the future is a hugely important setting, and this is a fine anime to fill it. I have watched this series three of four times now, and each time I appreciate it more.
I imagine most people have seen this, as it’s quite a popular series, but for those who haven’t, I highly recommend it. It isn’t the greatest animation in the world (for that see Samurai Champloo), but it is one of the best storylines I have ever seen, with interesting themes, and some very interesting characters.
Be forewarned: The ending recieves mixed reviews. I liked it, but one friend I watched it with attempted to throttle me when the last credits rolled.

1I am ashamed to say that I have yet to see this one even though it has been recommended to me a 1,000 times. Everytime I have the $$$ I seem to get transfixed by some other series so Trigun always gets put on the backburner. Looks like I am running out of excuses.

2Oh, Scrivs, for shame. :-) The moment my bf saw the first episdoe, he bought the entire series. ;-)
At any rate, what’s interesting is that the manga comic has very major twists that is NOT in the anime.
For example, the ending and certain characters have QUITE the different outcome. :-D It’s hard to say which one is better. So beatniklew, for your disgruntled friend, I would point him/her to the comic book store post haste!

3I Saw the ending of trigun and was kind of dissapointed. It left you hangin, not really knowing what happens. But I was wondering If there was a second season coming out. I heard it was called “Trigun Maximum”. You guys ever hear of that?

4Here’s the deal: the manga series Trigun was renamed Trigun Maximum to drive up sales (it wasn’t very popular in Japan, but here in America where cowboys are a stronger cultural influence, it was a sensation). When it was made into an anime, the manga had not ended. The anime had to come up with their own way to wrap up the storyline, and did not have the original writer’s input on it. This happens from time to time in anime (see Kenshin, countless others).
I liked the ending of Trigun. It fit the characters.

5Anyone who didn’t like the ending to Trigun just didn’t understand it. There was a lot of symbolism used in the series, particularly regarding the characters and their themes. I don’t want to give away spoilers, but I think I can say that what happened in the end was Vash finally accepting part of Wolfwood’s philosophy.

9I didnt like the ending, I LOVE the anime though, I love Trigun. But it ended with him saying something like “Rem, I will continue to believe in you, but I will turn to my own words for guidence now.” So… does that mean he is gonna start killing people now… doesnt that kinda defeat the point of his character throughout the anime…

11DieToWin, if you read Djinx’s post and thought about it, you’d understand.
Basically Vash realized he might have to kill to protect others, and no it doesn’t defeat the point of his character, it shows that he’s changed for the better. Let’s face it… if our race was always pacifist, we would never have evolved/survived.
I was a bit confused about the Meryl scene in episode 25 (I think).. because Wolfwood was talking about reincarnation before he died so I thought that meant Meryl was actually Rem. I’d like to think so.. cause now Vash can finally get it on with her.
Love & Piece of that please. :)

12woah woah woah. vash didnt realize “he might have to kill people.” he didn’t kill knives! why would he put bandages on him. he just learned that mistakes happen and that the great part of being human was that you can reconcile those mistakes. he did that by NOT killing knives. and vash wasn’t a pacifist he used a frigging gun. that’s not pacifist. he just didnt KILL anyone. pacifists avoid any time of violent confrontation. yes Vash tried not to use his gun, in the anime anyways, but he did when he had too.
trigun was my favorite anime. but the manga is a million times better. easily. go buy every issue and read them and love them. the anime was great, the manga is greater.
