Most would think that working at Google is every tech geek’s dream. Well, it’s probably just hype. Of course there are the excellent benefits and work set-up such as free gourmet lunches, Google stock, and being able to work on your pet projects 20% of the time. Still, it’s work and you either enjoy it or not (and you tend to either slack or age faster when you don’t enjoy what you do).
Here’s a peek into how it’s like to interview with Google. Peter Abilla was contacted for a position in Google’s print team. After two days of gruelling interviews–11 in all, and with free Google goodies–and a couple of weeks’ looking forward to a good offer, Peter had to decline as the offer wasn’t what he had expected.
His observation of the entire experience, though is what I find interesting: the Googlers didn’t seem to be too happy with where they were (pardon the capitalization, or lack thereof).
all in all, the experience was okay. there is certainly more hype about google than i believe it really merits. true, they hire sharp â really sharp people; i felt a lot of energy and could see the innovation happening there. but, the people i interviewed with didnât seem happy to me. they looked tired and grumpy. i didnât get a feeling that google treats their people very well. iâm glad for my decision not to join google. but, iâll always wish i had free reign on those odwalla drinks.
I guess in any company, no matter how great the environment is supposed to be, there would be people who are unhappy, or at least tired and stressed out!

2I have a feeling that the guy was definitely quick to judge based on who was doing the interviewing and not the company as a whole. That’s very shortsighted and I would’ve taken up the offer in order to gain the experienced perspective and not just a glance.

3Thing is, the guy was already working elsewhere, and he seemed quite happy (and earning well). My thinking is that had Google offered him the permanent position he was hoping for (i.e., with the stock, health plans, etc.) then he would’ve given it more thought.

4Personally I wouldn’t of turned the offer down on the spot, I would say that my family are a key part of my moving, and I would need a permanent job with better benefits to justify a move for my family who are already rooted where we are.
But meh, we don’t know how good his current job is?
I do like the bit about that screen in the lobby that shows current searches, sounds very cool.

5Google makes it so hard to get an offer in the first place, why turn it down. I know someone that had to do 8 interviews in Ireland and still didn’t get a position. I reckon if you’ve worked in Google, your CV for other jobs would be great.

7I have a good number of acquaintances that work for Google, within different departments and they even communicate mixed messages. In the end most employees feel the same, it’s just another job.
