One of Vista Ultimate’s exclusive add-ons (although I find it a bit pointless), is Dreamscene. An application which allows you to put a WMV or MPEG file as your desktop’s background. Still, if you think that that application could be useful for you, there are already some Windows tools that do exactly that, at no extra price.
VLC (Video Lan Client) is one of those said tools. It’s a multi-platform Media Player with incorporated codecs, which means that you can watch videos encoded in the most popular formats without the need of installing any extra software. Here is a reduced version of the referred guide:
And that’s it really. If you want to remove VLC from the systray (Dreamscene doesn’t appear there), you can follow the other steps in the guide. This beats shelling out $400 for this Windows “exclusivity” if you ask me.

1Good tip although if somebody buys Vista Ultimate just for Dreamscene, they’re jacked up. I got Ultimate primarily for for Bitlocker and other Ultimate extras will be rolling that will have more utility than the Dreamscene eye candy.
