Warner announces Total Hi Def disks

Over the past few months we’ve seen and hear about various different ways to try and solve the HD format war. Warner has probably just shown the best one: Total Hi Def disks (I know, I’m not madly in love with the name either).

These disks allow you to have HD-DVD on one side of the disk, and Blu-Ray on the other, therefore making it possible to play the same disk in both format players. Warner says that the disks will probably cost a bit more because of the two licenses it requires, however, they are not charging anyone to use the method.

I wonder if this means that in a few months time we’ll be able to have 4 layered disks… that would make 200GB if both sides were Blu-Ray.

Whatever graphic artist designed that should be taken out and shot. It reminds me of the old 80s and 90s pirate VHS & SEGA MegaDrive cases we got in Singapore.

Who’s gonna buy these? If they’re the same price, fine. If the dual format is $10 more, it’s going to be hard to justify paying close to $40 for a movie.

I’m guessing that most people buying next gen dvds (myself included) have already picked a side. So unless they are real enthusiasts and want both formats, they’re not going to care.

Like I said, if the price is the same, then it’s a great idea.
