Probably the biggest tech news to come out in the last week was the surprise decision of Warner Bros. to drop support for HD-DVD and go Blu-ray exclusive. Warner Bros., which is the biggest distributor of DVDs, with market sales of about 18 to 20 per cent in the United States, used to be format neutral. The company’s decision to just back one horse in the HD format wars has been seen by many as the death knell for the rival HD DVD technology being backed by Toshiba and other companies, among them Microsoft.

The HD DVD consortium has even cancelled its press conference last Sunday at the CES 2008.

I’ve always backed the Blu-ray camp even when it was taking a lot of shots from HD-DVD supporters and despite the first few snags that hit the technology that Sony has developed. I think this has proved me right. Blu-ray is THE format of the future.
