Windows 2000 Support ends June 30th

Microsoft announced Friday on IE’s blog that they will no longer be providing any support for Windows 2000, in other words, or straight from the horses’ mouth:

“Microsoft will not accept requests for warranty support, design changes, or new features during the Extended support phase.”

They will however provide security updates until 2010. This editor tips his hat for Microsoft’s best (in his opinion) operative system to date and hopes that one day Microsoft will grace us with such a good operative system again. Let’s be realistic, all the later versions of Windows are more unstable, if Longhorn manages to be as stable as 2000, that is reason enough to upgrade, new eye-candy GUI isn’t (although it wouldn’t hurt).

I only format my hard drive when I’m too lazy too back up the files in it. Still, it doesn’t take much, or hardly anything at all for a Windows machine to get infected with pop-up makers or general malware.

If you have any friends or family with a PC that they use ocasionally for writting documents and downloading a few media files, chances are that, no actually, they definitely have something bad on their pc either slowing it down or making it unstable / annoying as hell.

And if you write or work on any documents at all on your XP, there is a chance that the system will lockup making you lose your work. Which is specially annoying, unless you develop the habit of hitting CTR+S everytime you change something like I have.

I once ran into a situation in which I had just formated a PC, and when I installed the network drivers it already had the blaster worm. Sure SP2 blocks it after, but why do Microsoft’s Security patches only appear after the viruses, and how come no matter how many security patches they make, the growth of viruses doesn’t slow down?

Stability? Security? I have found none of that on Windows XP without the need of tweaking, specific programs and general computer knowledge and even so it’s not full proof.

The world is just Microsoft’s big fat cow, and they intend to milk everything they can out of it.

installing windows xp and putting the machine back in the box and leaving it for 3 years doesnt count.

windows blows…

/bows head in shame, is currently booted into windows becuase he cant vpn into work from linux :(

Interesting comment Joey. The first thing I noticed when I first booted up my Linux system is how much the OS looks and feels like Windows. Can I deduce from your comments that you then in turn think Linux blows as well?

Don’t get me wrong, I think Linux is pretty cool. For the time being, I consider Windows to be a tried and true OS with considerable features and ease of use second to none. That may change over time. But for now…

The first thing I thought after reading your comment was “It’s gotd*mn people like you who allow MS to keep *30@)(! us with poorly written software”. Allow me to clarify: LINUX is the cats meow because it is open source; therefore, you or I could make whatever changes we want to it. Also, we could publish those on the Internet, because it is likely others will benefit as well. On the other hand, Microsoft blows because they want to control every piece of software..i.e. write their own version of it (check out MS Metro v.s. Adobe PDF) and they usually do a crap job of it. BUT, Bill Gates has tons of money and can offer his poorly crafted imation for free to all of us, who end up using it either because A) everyone else does, and they could care less about quality or B) some corporate fatso does and your forced to use it (as is the case with Comedy Central posting a bunch of vids in WMA format which is not as good as Real).

Finally, the evolutionary tree of the GUI (the “look and feel” of Windows) goes like
Xerox –> Apple –> Windows X 1000 other copy cats like OS/2 and Be so dont act like its anything special that Linux does it too..it is a good idea and beats memorizing commands.

DO some research before you knock someone else’s comments.
