1fee or free is not the issue. i would be much happier paying for access that I know is reliable, than having problems on a free hotel network. you would be better-off runing an extensive network analysis on the systems you are rating to determine if it is the best or worst, instead of looking at whether it is free or fee. this analysis should include making sure all guests get a quality connection at all times, even if other guest are busy downloading music or movies, or if other guests have viruses or spyware affecting the network or spreading to your laptop.
