“Blades of Glory” isn’t what I would call a particularly geeky movie…but it does feature super-geek John Heder, and Jenna Fischer, who seems to get the geeks blood pressure up, so I decided to check it out.

Let me start by saying that I am a fan of Will Ferrell. I enjoyed “Anchorman” for what it was, and I was really impressed with him in “Stranger Than Fiction”. I also really enjoyed “Napoleon Dynamite” (even though the merchandising on that thing got WAY out of control). So the idea of Will Ferrell and John Heder in a comedy together sounded like a good idea to me. After seeing the first trailer for Blades, however, I didn’t have much hope for this movie hitting it out of the park.

Unfortunately, that concern was well founded. “Blades of Glory” really wants to be funny…and it is…to a point…but everyone involved in this thing has done better work, and over-all the movie fell flat for me.

If you’ve seen the trailer, you know the story…two male figure skaters get banned from the “sport” for fighting with each other…only to find a loop hole back in 3 and a half years later by competing in Pair figure skating. There isn’t much more to it than that. Amy Poehler and Will Arnett play a brother and sister duo of rival skaters that try to use their sister, played by Jenna Fischer of “The Office”, to break the male figure skaters apart.

In large part this is a film of awkward humor. For example, the first “kiss” between John Heder and Jenna Fischer, may very well be the most uncomfortable and disturbing 15 seconds of film I have ever witnessed.

It’s not so much that this is a terrible movie…it just wasn’t funny enough for me to recommend it to others. I still expect it to do well this weekend, but overall this a forgettable film that mainly left me wanting to see a real romantic comedy starring Fischer and the Will Ferrell that was in Stranger Than Fiction….hey…that’s not a bad idea…
