Amazon has added the ability for customers to upload their own photos to be displayed with the Amazon-supplied product shots. This is a really amazing idea in my opinion, and it looks like people are already uploading some helpful photos, comparing the product’s size to other common items, pointing out “trouble spots”:http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/customer-images/B0002OKCX4/ref=cm_ciu_pdp_images_1/002-1052569-5777652?%5Fencoding=UTF8&index=1#gallery, showing the “back”:http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/customer-images/B0000DC69T/ref=cm_ciu_pdp_images_0/002-1052569-5777652?%5Fencoding=UTF8&index=0#gallery of some items that you don’t normally see from the generic product shots, etc.
Other users can rate the images based on how helpful they were in their decision to buy the product, etc. The feature isn’t available for all items yet, because it’s still in beta, but it looks like most of the electronics products have it in full effect.

2I can already sense the level of panic in various companies’ Marketing departments? They spend lots of bucks on branding & product shots. No doubt they feel undermined by user-submitted photos. At the same time, they probably felt that way w/ text comments, but this is bringing it to a new level.
Like it personally though.

3True… It’s bad for companies I guess because they can’t make their products look perfect in every shot. But great for consumers because you can actually see what you’re getting, without all the fancy lighting and clever angles.

4It’s great for everyone. If you think of it as a company too, it’s great direct feedback from the customers. True that correcting design flaws and issues takes time (sometimes), but this is a very inexpensive way for them to learn about how customers are “viewing” their products.
As for customers, what can I say! I am a compulsive Amazon reviewer and somewhat (more controlled these days) of a compulsive Amazon buyer, at times… so I love it! :)
Nice blog, BTW!
