Dell starts selling computers without Windows Pre-installed

Dell, one America’s biggest computer manufacturers have just released a new n Series of desktop PCs that do not come with Windows pre-installed. Not only does this allow the manufacturer to slice off a bit of the price but it also gives Linux a chance to eat up a bit of Windows’ share.

So if you’re a Linux aficionado, or just feel like trying out an Open Source OS for a change, then this might be a good choice for you.

Currently, I have three computers. One is from a Mom & Pop computer store. I formatted this one as a dual-boot Win2K and Fedora Core 5. My second computer is a HP Media Center. At first, I was excited because HP makes such a big deal of supporting Linux. Unfortunately, HP only supports Linux on their business systems. With their home systems, the Windows XP disk puts a recovery partition on the HDD. My third computer is a new Gateway laptop. From what I am reading on the web, Gateway’s recovery disk does the same partitioning as HP. Hopefully, Dell will start selling laptops without Windows pre-installed.

At last. Well done Dell. Let’s just hope thyey extend this accross their range of PC’s and Laptops and offer any machine with no OS installed.
