Despite the bad press they’ve been lately, unlike what some people think Sony does seem to be worrying about getting the consoles out to the consumers as fast as they can. Kaz Hirai from Sony explains:
We are trying everything we can to get as many units into the North American market as possible. The thing that we’re trying to focus on now is shortening the lead time from the factories to the retailers and consumers. Usually, something this size and weight we would put on a boat, but what we’re doing is chartering planes to fly them in … that combined with trying to ramp up production as quickly as possible as well.
One of the commenters in the original articled asked how Sony is going to make any money with the PS3 this way. Since according to other news, the Playstation 3 is a bargain and they’re already losing money by selling it at it’s current price. Will the Playstation 3 go down the same path that the original XBox did, or will the Playstation’s titanic player base compensate with other purchases for the losses over these first months/years?
