According to ZDNet, Microsoft plans to make Office 13 completely web-based.
Microsoft is leaping into hosted applications big time. InformationWeek reports that Microsoft plans to offer hosted implementations of SharePoint, CRM and ERP applications. But the best quote in that article was left till last. A “Microsoft insider” was asked which other products and services Microsoft would host and the reply was: “Everything. Hosted Office. Everything hosted.”

1I’ve dreamed of the day I could pay a monthly subscription to be able to use Office!
Who wants to be it will STILL be incompatible with Linux and old versions of Windows? ;-)

2Hosted != web-based. Just cause it’s hosted somewhere else doesn’t mean you’ll be able to run it in any browser, or a browser at all.

3Oh, just another kneejerk flame to anything MS does. Yes, MS Office use propretary format. But in all fairness, MS Office is the best in it’s class. Windows definately suck and is there only because of MS monopoly. But Office is actually a good product and would sell like hotcakes even if it wasn’t associated with MS.

4You are completely misinterpreting the story. There will be a hosted VERSION of MS Office, yes. It doesn’t mean it will be the ONLY version. There has been a hosted version of most of them for years. Look for the “online trial” of Visual Studio for example.
