This goes along with my article on the Geek Ego. Unfortunately there are no real new revelations in this article, but saying how the Linux community is splintering is kind of silly.

We now have two distinct classes of Linux users whose interests are not the same, and perhaps we have more than that if we want to talk about people who think of software in political rather than pragmatic terms. Can these factions work together, or will tensions between them eventually kill the free software and open source movements?

Correct me if I am wrong, but won’t you find these two groups in almost every OS community? Geeks like to tinker and toy, while the non-technical in the crowd simply just need to get stuff done. Will this kill Open Source? If it hasn’t by now it never will. Again, too many geeks talk about Linux taking over the world when that doesn’t even need to be a priority. Be happy with what we got and the fact that it is constantly improving. That should always be enough for anyone. It is free afterall.
