Robert hits the nail on the head as to why Linux is so dangerous to pretty much every tech establishment (company) in the world. The OS becomes the commodity. Once that happens, its all up in the air for any takers.

I didn’t even know you could do all those things with the Linksys router though. Might have to go out and get one this week.

He’s talking about what i used in the wifi article, except his focus is more on vonage and other voip providers. vonage is cool and all, but the #1 complaint with it still remains… if your internet’s down, it won’t work, and internet connections aren’t nearly as reliable as the existing phone system. And dialing 911, I want a connection even if I have a bad wifi signal or the network is hosed or the provider’s cat bit through their OC3 or (a recent occurance here, actually) lightning struck the upstream provider’s wifi tower and blew out some equipment.

That’s not to say the WRT54G with hacked firmware isn’t damned cool… just that vonage and other VOIP providers need alot of work before we can nix the landlines entirely. Heck, just having the VOIP phones be able to tap into the local cellular phone networks for 911 calls only would be a huge improvement.
