One nitpick I have with the tab system of Firefox is that to close a tab with a mouse I have to click on a tiny x in the upper right corner. Although I usually just use the Command-W combination, certain times call for a mouse click. If you don’t hit the X just right you will click a blank space which produces another tab.
Tab X takes care of this by adding Xs to all the tabs so now I can clear individual tabs without having to right-click on it. Why this isn’t done by default is beyond me.

4Safari puts Xs on each tab–and I hate it! Say what you like about having just a single “X” on the side, but that single “X” on the side strongly reduces the probability of “accidentally” hitting an “X” when you meant to hit the tab. IMO, per-tab Xs are a design defect because the colocation of the “delete” and “select” hit zones makes it all too easy to accidentally hit the wrong zone and get a very undesired behavior (more so when lots of tabs are open so that the width of the X is a large proportion of the width of the tab). Oops! Where’d my tab go?! :-)

7Tabbrowser Extensions provides a huge array of customisations for tabs. Putting ‘X’ where you want is one of many many options. Double-click to close, or middle-click, or ctlr-click, or right-click. Hover the mouse over a tab to switch to that tab. Group tabs and colourise them. Set a tab to refress every x seconds… And lots more.
The flexibility is amazing, it’s my favourite extension.

8Regarding OS X: the middle-mouse button will not require remapping when Firefox 1.1 is released. I’m using the nightlies, the fix is already in and it works wonderfully.
