Any self respecting geek would be familiar with Dan Simmons’ seminal Hyperion Cantos, probably the most significant science fiction series to come out in many, many years. I am a big fan of epic, sweeping science fiction stories (I plodded through the Dune series even though the latter novels were so ugghh) and Simmons’ vision is just on a scale that really encompasses my whole imagination.
For those who may not have the inclination to read such a daunting, and often confusing universe, you will now have the chance to enjoy Hyperion through the more accessible medium of film. Warner Bros., through producer Graham King, will be working on bringing Hyperion to the big screen. The initial plan is to make one feature film that will attempt to squeeze in the rich detail of the first two books.
I have a lot of reservation about the plan to fit the two books into one film because it will surely gloss over a lot of the details that make the books so rich and entertaining. But then a dumbed down version of Hyperion could be a good vehicle for enticing viewers to read the actual novels, which I think would be cool. Simmons deserves a far bigger audience compared to that hack Nicholas Sparks anyway.
