Sony is pulling the 20GB Sony PS3 model from their manufacturing line, as the 60GB version has been sold nine times more than its smaller brother.
The differences between the two consoles, other than the hard drive size, include some chrome detailing, media slots and built-in Wi-Fi on the 60GB edition.
Sony USA had this to say:
“At launch, we offered two separate models of PLAYSTATION 3 to meet the diverse needs and interests of our PlayStation fan base. Initial retail demand in North America was upwards of ninety percent in favor of the 60GB sku, so we manufactured and shipped-in accordingly. Due to the overwhelming demand for the 60GB model from both retailers and consumers, we have ceased offering the 20GB model here in North America. In addition to the larger internal hard drive, the 60GB PlayStation 3 features added storage media slots and built-in Wi-Fi not found in the 20GB system. Based on retailer and consumer feedback, we have decided to focus our current efforts on the more popular 60GB model.”
For most people this means that there is no longer an “entry” level console for the PlayStation 3, meaning some people will have to wait now until there is a price drop. With the Xbox 360 Elite coming out with its 120GB hard drive, Sony is going to be hard pressed over the next while, and I expect a new 80GB or 120GB PS3 coming out sometime later this year to compete more efficiently.
