The Inquirer recently got the chance to play around with a Windows Vista machine, so, as any gamer would they tried out a game on it. That game was Farcry, a game that runs on this laptop which has a GeForce 6200 Go with 512 RAM. The Vista installation was clean, in other words it had only an Internet Explorer Window and the task manager on, yet, it was consuming 1.24GB of RAM.
Sure, you’ll be able to run it with 1GB of RAM, but if FarCry takes this much, imagine more demanding games like Doom 3 or Quake 4.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, Vista’s memory/processor consumption is ridiculous for what it does.

1Keep in mind, MS have made no claims to vista being ‘done’. I’m sure, closer to release, much more optimisations will be in place.
Furthermore, that’s running at full graphics, you neglected to mention that vista’s gui can be scaled down

2Not to mention the fact that this is a friggin beta OS with unoptimized code paths. Talk about your anti-windows-Mac-fan boyz, sheesh.
Having said that, by early 2K7 u could well need 2GB to run the latest and greatest games at max res with all eye candy on. But certainly not for Farcry with it’s current game engine.

3With Windows Blinds you can exactly the same eye candy with much less consumption.
*That* is why I say this memory consumption by Vista is ridiculous. I’m not even a mac user, I’ve used Windows ever since I’ve used a computer.
PS: evilKat, you need to put the contents of the wordpress.zip file on that folder, not the zip file itself. And don’t upload the “root” Wordpress folder, otherwise your blog will be installed to evilkat.org/blog/wordpress

4Yeah but blinds in my experience has led to more crashes than anything else on the few machines I tried it on and I can’t say that I was entirely happy with the program.
Lets face it, the XP GUI API sucks ass, and everything done to modify it felt like a hack. Windows blinds is just another hack on top of a hack. In the end I just didn’t like it…even though it claimed to accelerate the GUI rendering using hardware I never saw a huge gain with it.
I don’t think that blog link works anymore. I used to have my WP blog there but not anymore (switched servers). One of these days I’m going to have to get it up and running again.

5The system shown only has 1GB of physical memory, how exactly do you get 1.24GB of RAM consumption? Was this even a release version?

6@Maqo - perhaps the OS is also counting the virtual memory use?

9No, physical memory is physical memory, and the headline claims that Vista is using 1.24GB of it.
