The newest version of MSN Messenger instant messaging product, released late Wednesday, allows consumers to download free backgrounds, pictures and other content tied to specific ad campaigns. The hope is that users will then share those downloads with other consumers providing another boost to advertisers, who pay Microsoft for the privilege.
Interesting to see how this works out. I find it hard to force teenagers to follow a given plan so to speak. Trends usually happen from accident, but apparently Microsoft and other large companies feel they can get Messenger users to take on the brands of companies. Call me Mr. Trojan from now on then.
Microsoft also is releasing the official first version of MSN Spaces, a free personal Web journal system that debuted in test form in December. As part of an advertising campaign, Ford Motor Co.’s Volvo Cars of North America is debuting its own “space” that will solicit commentary from Volvo loyalists. Irving said Volvo will have editorial control of the posts.
I could care less.

1This was the best you could do? You are that pressed for content that you are reduced to discussing an unimportant instant messaging client. Well I just as everyone has an asshole, I have an opnion.
I installed MSN messenger last night before slumber time (yes, that’s 11:30 EST Scrivs, some of us have this thing called a job :x), and I uninstalled it about 8 minutes afterwards. Realizing that is the same shit, different pile.
The only service worth a damn is AIM, and the client and users suck. I am a fan of trillian and miranda, because they strip out all the crap. Either way you still get spammed. I am an always on user who buddy list only.
But as far as MSN messenger, I use it at work on an exchange server. But outside of a LAN it is worthless. I mean it could be raining vaginas, and MSN messenger still wouldn’t get any play.
World record this Scrivs :x (just kidding).

And Ryan, WTF are you even talking about? Drinking too much again?

4I’ve never used MSN messenger but i’m willing to try it. But if it’s that bad screw it.

5MSN Messenger is the only IM I use, because everyone I know uses it. 6.2 was fine. I tried 7beta but after a while it got extremely annoying. It wouldn’t send messages unless I closed the chat window and reopened it. At the point I went back to 6.2. I was a step down in visuals, but I didn’t miss any features.
Now MSN Messenger 7 is finally out, officially, so I upgraded to that. First thing was to disable the nudges and, the even more stupid, winks. I had to then reorder my contacts again, in groups with offlines grouped together.
A new feature over MSN Messenger 7b was the displaying of the contacts personal icon in the main window. An interesting new addition but after a while it’s slightly annoying. You can’t easily see whether someone is busy or away compared to the original icon logos.
Other useless features include the “writing” which is pointless. And I haven’t had use for the new integrated search…yet.
However, coupled with MsgPlus and the tweaks it boasts, I’ll still continue to use it. I especially like the new Msg+ feature to type in names for your contacts AND display their chosen name.
Now, I want to get rid of the damn advert like you could with the old Msg+. Unfortunately it’s been removed from the addon…

6I’m not quite as fortunate to have broadband yet and with a poor internet connection, it soon became clear what was takin nearly 99.9% of my bandwidth!!
It’s enormous 11mb of total shit. It’s far to big and consequently its laggy. Its now no longer a simple messenger it’s full to the brim with ‘new features’ that I personally see as ‘f*cking annoying’ i.e winks and nudges, high priority once I’d downloaded msn 7 was to disable these irritating features.
I’m not entirely sure what they have done when I comes to sharing files over msn but it’s blocks almost all files and if you do actually download them good luck trying to open them. Msn 7 seems to have a built in ’safety’ feature for those less intelligent dimwitts that accept the files in the first place…
Is there any possible way of returning back to the equally safe and fun version 6.2 because by the time the next msn comes out I’m seriously debating whether the people at mircosoft are taking the piss or scraping the barrell.
April 11th, 2005 at 6:54 pm
7I used to really like MSN Messenger… then came the commercials… you know, the spam that you can’t opt out of. This version has even more of the advertising. Too bad.
April 12th, 2005 at 11:23 pm
8So my friends were like “MSN 7 OMG its cool go download it!” I’m like “Meh, Microsoft are scum, I know them well”.. in the end I went and downloaded it to see what the whatever…
MSN 6.2 was quite a resource hog at startup, but to communicate with the lesser intellect people I had to have it installed, so I didn’t mind a bit slower startup for its sake…
And btw I use an athlon 64 3200+ with 1gig RAM and other stuff, my Windows (XP) is pretty much optimized for gaming and such
anyway, so I got this MSN 7, weeee, it has so many cool features, oh but wait, you have to PAY to get those? wtf, and oh there are free ones but you have to put your EMAIL? gimme a break! Everytime you open your emoticon list there’s this bandwidth loss (sometimes big) for the sake of getting the latest featured emoticon packages that you have to pay to get… and oh yeah lets not forget Nudges and Winks, and other annoying features.
Not to mention, MSN 7 uses a TOTALLY unnecessary amount of resources, its atleast 4x the resource hog that MSN 6.2 is at startup, only MSN 7 uses that much resources constantly while browsing through it. (well thats Microsoft for you)
I mean ok sure there are a few good stuff about MSN 7, but the Bad stuff outrule it, so, by getting MSN 7 you would have “Shitted on the shit”
I went to download MSN 6.2 from Microsoft’s website (hehe surprise), while I was downloading I went to this site to read the comments above. Uninstalled that heap of junk called MSN 7 and installed MSN 6.2, it said to me something like WARNING to continue you must download the new update, in fact it wouldn’t let me sign in until I did so, I was like “*sigh* back to MSN 7 I guess” but, then again, surprise! It was still MSN 6.2
I had the same version of MSN Plus that I was using with MSN 7, here’s another surprise: It still disables Ads when I got MSN 6.2, I guess the option is hidden for MSN 7 users..
So yeah, MSN 6.2 is still up for grabs, at this link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=1b5bfaee-4bfa-42bf-a42e-417d748cefa1
Its not the best link since it needs you to download an update after getting it, but its worth it if you want to get out of the MSN 7 nightmare -_-
what a relief.

9fuck*ng msn 7.. all my friends think as ahard than rock that msn 7 is the best thing ever, with the nudges & Wink… yeah so cool to pass a night to send nudge to someone.. tSss .. for some seconds, i ask to myself, if i’m the one to have a problem to accept in my life the new msn 7.. am i too conservative?.. but after some search i finally & fortunately found this site & many other!! noW i’m norMAl!!! :)
thx a lot !!
6.2 iS thA besT!

10I found an easy way to block MSM Messenger ads in version 7.0. All you have to do is make an entry in your hosts file that associates the wrong IP address with the domain name “config.messenger.msn.com”. When Messenger starts up it pulls all the advertisement information in a soap request… you can check out the details on my blog.

14OMG - I can’t believe so many people out there have such strong opinions on a messaging program.
The new features have been added for kids and kids alone. If you don’t like them DON’T USE THEM! If you don’t like the program at all, uninstall it. If you’re forced to use it because your friends do, use one of the multi-protocol messenger apps or an older version. It’s that simple - honest!

19how do i get nudges and winks and a msn messanger account
August 29th, 2005 at 12:10 am
20MSN 7 is such a total piece of crap, ok, for the average teenager who wants to spend their days sending winks and falling for gullible
ads, meh, maybe.
Note to Microsoft: WE ARE ALL Not teens!
August 29th, 2005 at 12:13 am
21What I would have suggested is releasing two different MSN versions; one for people
who actually want to talk, and perhaps MSN MEssenger 7T: Messenger for teens.
That way, the teenagers can show little smilies and winks and worry more
about “who blocked me?”.Does it REALLY, I mean really matter who blocked someone?
October 11th, 2005 at 3:30 pm
22Im A teenager anf I think MsN Mesenger 7 and 7.5 are total shit waste of space and a waste of time msn 6.2 is da best i got it and dnt need 2 update to dat shit

24mmmmhhmmm….right…i beleive in an honest opinion that THIS site..is a veeerryy angryyy one…you all need to LIGHTEN UP!:D infact,a great big percentage of people who use msn ARE in fact TEENS..such as moi:),and personally..i like the winks, and the AWSOME moving backgrounds..like the fish for example..there pretty frigin kool if you ask me..now i understand that if your old..er..then maybe you WONt enjoy these NIFTY lil features like these but PLEASE..dont ruin it for the people who do,if you hav a problem with it then just simply..DONT use it???COMON..im 14 and i can see that its just immature to be COMPLAINING about somthing small like msn messenger.
Anyway..on with my serfing the web!
November 16th, 2005 at 12:11 pm

30“im 14 and i can see that its just immature to be COMPLAINING about somthing small like msn messenger.”
It is also VERY immature to send winks and nudges and fall for gullible ads about “GRAT NEW BANDS” that are like over 2 years old..
December 17th, 2005 at 3:06 am
31to all you stupid peep that think msn is crap you fuck off msn is the coolest way to chat and u just dont know it cause your the real geeks so get off your but and download it cause it rocks.
January 4th, 2006 at 7:23 pm

Comments from the gullible msn user who probably has infintie trojans - probably posts on another forum “how cumz ma msn not let me sign on”
January 4th, 2006 at 7:56 pm
33Every time I talk to someone who has MSN 7 + they keep getting booted off, I have never seen an msn 7 user without problems.

37“msn is the coolest way to chat” - post 31
Chatting on MSN? yeah, if you could call
seding winks all night and nudges to annoy your
contact, then having to “see who blocked me”,
chatting.
Hehe what the kids don’t know is there is a way to avoid them using a block checker on your address
January 4th, 2006 at 8:15 pm

HMMMM, they also don’t know that 98% of MSN add-on sites have spyware.

January 6th, 2006 at 10:18 pm
41”to all you peep that hate msn messenger”
we are not peeps we are people bitch,go hang yourself and go send nudges in the afterlife…
January 6th, 2006 at 10:21 pm
42How the hell are nudges and winks considered “chatting” lol.
They go nuts ovr “Who blocked me” programs..
maybe if they spent more time talking, and not bombarding people with nudges or winks, thy wouldn’t get blocked in the friggin first place.
January 6th, 2006 at 10:25 pm
43Why are trojans so wide spread?
Teens who are dumb enough to believe automated messages in MSN.

44“teens fall for anything, stupid naive and have no knowledge in security”
You got that right. “OH look a cool new smiley, oh oh look a cool new ringtone,”, whilst someone else has said “man, they fell for it, what’s in their pc?”
January 30th, 2006 at 2:34 am
45Hi my name is Layla i love this sevice it is a good way 2 get intouch with our friendz and cozenz thank you for making msn!!!

46QUOTE: “Hey man, leave her alone, she is only like 14, she doesn’t know any better..”
Yeah, that’s fine, but I take offence to that!! Me being 13 ‘n’ all…
I have 7.5… I don’t see what the fuss is about. I just stick with whatever one I have, and then if one of my friends tries to send me something that requires a newer version, I download it. Quit fussing.
P.S.: Please try and spell right, people… and just in case, I use New Zealand Spelling, and that can be different from American or British spelling.

47man u peaple bitch alot. i run a AMD 3200+ with a GB Ram and it aint a problem. hu cares if some nube dowloads some sh*t nd gets a virus, obviously ur so great that you’ll never do it so how does it affect u.all im reading is bitch bitch bitch i love to whine
February 11th, 2006 at 8:24 am
48msn viruses are widely spreaded, it’s very common to get infected by one as long as you are using msn without having an updated anti-virus
February 14th, 2006 at 9:29 pm
49QUOTE: “I don’t see what the fuss is about”
True, but you also gave a good reason:
“Me being 13 ‘n’ all..”
Go back to MSN and send winks and nudges all night…that explains your sanity..if we wanna bitch, we will.
February 14th, 2006 at 9:33 pm
50“if some nube dowloads some sh*t nd gets a virus,”
IT affects us because these blind idiots are the ones that spread the viruses..
HAHA you noticed all the people that say “stop” bitching” are like 13 yrolds?
“run a AMD 3200+ with a GB Ram and it aint a problem.”
Yeah, but a lot of the msn users have crappy P2-500s with 128mb ram on dialup and always post saying “how come my msn won’t let me sign in”
February 14th, 2006 at 9:35 pm
51Just use Windows Messenger…no winks, no nudges, no “what I am listening to” crap, just plain, simple chat.
February 14th, 2006 at 9:37 pm
52I agree. Links in Windows Messenger aren’ clickable, which stops kids clicking on anything sent to them
What is so hard about TYPING:”I am listening to…..”
February 14th, 2006 at 9:47 pm
53I gave up MSN because when I typed something, people only knew how to reply with “lolz”
February 14th, 2006 at 10:22 pm

66Dear Mr/Mrs msn staff !!
I would like to alert you about a very serious matter that i have discovered whilst using the msn messenger. You are being very offensive by naming you emotion that wears glasses “nerd smile”
I am very concerened for the feelings of others who wear glasses, such as myself ! and would prefer if you could call it something a little more practical such as :
“glasses smile”
“smile with glasses”
“spectacle smile”
“geek smile not because of glasses”
“learning smile”
“educational smile”
and so on..
I hope you can change this for there are many other views on this matter i am sure! but i feel te feelings of others matter. And it is not a compliment to be called a nerd for having a mear dissability !!
your sincerely

67Hi PPL!
Since 3 days ago it isn’t possible at all to sign on with Messenger 6.2 anymore.
Does someone know of a hack that fixes 6.2 and makes it possible to use it anymore?
I hate 7.5 and I don’t want to use it.
I’ve tested GAIM but it’s not possible to get it down into the tray.

May 25th, 2006 at 12:58 pm
72THE TEN MSN COMMANDMENTS
1)Reply to everything people say with “lol”.
The point of msn is not to have a conversation.
2)Never type anything longer then 4 words.
The pint of msn messenger is to not have a conversation.
3)Your msn name must be 3 lines long, with circles and hearts everywhere, telling people that “someone you don’t know loves someone you don’t know”
4)If you see an automated link saying “I got my free msn name at http://www.freemsnnames.com” click it because it is actually MS advertising itself, and everyone you talk to is dying to have a “free msn name”
5)Enable “What are you listening to”. It’s absolutely vital to know that your contact is
listening to Black eyed Peas.
6)Be more concerned about who blocked who,
instead of trying to keep the contacts you have. If someone blocks you, finding out whether they blocked you is overly important.
7)If a new msn comes out, it is vital to get it as it is new and cool, you don’t want to be left out of being cool.
8)You MUST have a display picture that says
“I am sexy, you want me”. This is especially important if you are ugly and have no friends.
9)You must have as many contacts as you can, Your friend Amy has 100, so you have to have 110. It is cool to have a heap of contacts that you don’t talk to or are blocked.
10)You must be under 15 to use MSN.
