We all know the big name nerd movies that everyone loves. LOTR, Harry Potter, Star Wars, all the comic book movies etc. But there are a shit-ton of really good geek movies out there that just don’t get the love and attention they deserve because the big boys take all the credit. The problem is, now when nerd and geek movies don’t make billions, they just get pushed aside and ignored, even if they were brilliant. Yes, you may have seen all the big boys, but in the process, you missed some true gems. Here are 5 underrated nerd movies that more geeks need to see, love, and spread the word about.
Knights of Badassdom
All I should have to say to any real geeks is “a movie about LARP’ing that stars Peter Dinklage (Tyrion from Game of Thrones)” and you should be sold. Add in doom metal, said Game of Thrones character eating a bunch of magic mushrooms, and a real demon being mistakenly summoned during the LARP session, and you have a gem of a geek movie.
Keep in mind, this is a B-movie and knows it. Do NOT expect a big budget here. What you should expect is some belly laughs, some real gore, and a pretty damn good movie for geeks who grew up on Dungeons and Dragons (like me).
The Doomsday Book
A South Korean (best filmmakers in the world, IMHO) film that features different chapters all dealing with different aspects of the end of the world. All I have to say to sell this one is one chapter is about androids (and as good as any android movie in recent memory), one chapter is about zombies, and one chapter is about aliens. Any geeks or nerd should immediately be sold on those three ideas alone. And I haven’t even mentioned how well they all work.
Perhaps one of the most underrated nerd movies of all time because NO ONE even seems to know it exists.
Primer is a movie that, I wont lie, will take a few viewings to really process. It is a very smart film (sometimes too smart for its own good), but in that, may be the greatest time travel film that no one has heard of. Granted, in nerd circles this movie has got quite a cult following, but if you ask your average citizen, they have never even heard of Primer.
Primer is about some guys who mistakenly invent a time machine, and in that process, the deep repercussions of their actions begins to reveal itself. Again, a very smart film, almost jarringly so at certain points. But there are a few key moments in this movie you will never forget. I wont say more than that.
Enemy Mine is one of my favorite science fiction movies ever made, and yet, I bring it up to people and they look at me like I may as well have been speaking a dead language. Starring 80’s legends Dennis Quaid and Louis Gossett, Jr., it was about two enemies (one alien, one human) who end up on the same inhospitable planet and need to learn to work together and live side by side if they expect to survive. It is actually a great meditation on the idea and concept of “bad guys” and shows you that, when we strip away politics, we are all relatively the same. Just beings trying to survive.
I also still think the alien design and makeup for the Jeriba Shigan character (played by Gossett Jr.) is some of the most organic and effective alien makeup ever worn by an actor. His face is covered, yet he can still emote so much.
Also, extra points for the birthing scene, which has traumatized me deeply, even to this day.
Oh why, why of why? This is one of the most original and visually striking films ever made, and no one ever talks about it. A noir-esque film about a man who knows something is wrong with reality, yet no one else seems to notice. Come to find out, there is a secret conspiracy involving him being setup for a crime and alien parasites who are secretly controlling our perception of reality. It was VERY MUCH the Matrix before The Matrix in many ways (even right down to visual aesthetic) and “The Strangers” as the aliens are called, are pretty much scary as hell. They all look like bald vampires.
Plus, it has Jennifer Connelly. Anything with that goddess is an instant win. Speaking of nerd movies….
