Halloween is a wonderful time of year if you are a twisted person like me. You know there are more horror movies on TV, you know most people are getting in the spirit, and it’s the one time a year being a bit of a psychopath is okay. With Halloween just around the corner, we thought it might be a perfect time to throw some scary-ass horror short films at you to get you ready for tricking and maybe some treating. Well, honestly, we hope this puts you more in the moods for tricks than treats. You can buy treats anywhere, any time of year. But the tricking part? That is what makes the night so special. Here are 6 creepy short films to get you in the mood for Halloween.
This short film was made before the movie Trick-R-Treat and anyone who has seen that awesome horror anthology knows just what aspect of this short made it into that film. An animated tale about a young child just doing some innocent trick or treating on Halloween night.
The thing is, on Halloween, is anything as it first appears?
You know how when you are young your parents tell you cautionary tales about imaginary creatures to keep you from doing bad things? Sort of like made-up moral compasses to keep you in line. Think the boogeyman for example. Suckablood plays off that theme, but puts a sweet little twist on it in the end that will have the sickest of you smiling wide.
Aw hell no. This is why the smartest of us don’t have empty chests in our house. While coffer may have a somewhat predictable ending, one cannot deny the fear that comes from the concept. You have a chest in your house, and suddenly become aware something might be living inside it.
Thing is, that is only half the fear factor here. Again, you may see the ending coming, but the concept and execution (pun intended) are perfect.
Social media is terrifying. It really is. It is a bunch of people acting like their lives are perfect and trying to throw their triumphs in each other’s faces. It kinda sucks. It is also very invasive and weird in the sense that it can completely know everything about you just from your few interactions.
Suffice it to say, Alexia is different than most on the list because it shows us a different kind of horror. The horrors of social media. But that makes it no less gripping.
Let’s just drop the cool nerd facade for a second and all admit that dolls are scary as hell. Even moreso when they have one eye and look like Satan himself made it with his own hoofs. That is kinda how you will feel about the doll in this short film. You will know right away when you first see it that NO GOOD can come from this creature’s existence, and you are 100% right.
But the way the doll looks and that final shot just get me every time. Screw Annabelle. This shit wins.
D is for Dogfight
Alright, I will be the first to admit that I cheated a little bit on this one. Where the above short films are YouTube short films, D is for Dogfight was actually part of an amazing anthology film called The ABC’s of Death. So you will see that puts it ahead of the other with its visuals as well as its storytelling.
Thing is, when this short horror film begins, you will think you know where it is going. And then, by the end, it switches up that direction and throws a nice little twist in there. Might not be as ‘Halloween’ as the others on this list, but it is just as badass and a truly fitting way to end this cavalcade of horror shorts.
