FLCL is coming back for not just a second season, but also a third. But to longtime fans, that wasn’t a surprise. We’ve known that for awhile. FLCL creator Kazuya Tsurumaki was joined by original Haruko voice Mayumi Shintani to tell the excited crowd that they couldn’t tell us much of anything when it came to the characters, the setting, or the story, we did get one BIG tasty morsel which had been weighing on fans’ minds since the return of FLCL was first announced – The Pillows are back!
Known for creating the guitar-driven Japanese rock that perfectly matched the original series’ intensely manic animation style, The Pillows will once again be tracking all-new music for the soundtrack over the next two seasons. If that doesn’t mean anything to you, then it’s obvious you’ve never seen FLCL.
Okay, since it’s probably very likely that you might not know anything about FLCL, I have to admit it’s very hard to describe. It’s unlike any other anime series I’ve ever seen. And every time I watch it, I see something else I didn’t see before. All I can tell you is that you have to see (and hear) it for yourself, regardless of whether you’re into reading subtitles or listening to the non-Japanese dub tracks… or if you already know Japanese. The whole first season is currently available on Blu-Ray through FUNimation.
Here’s a little fan-made taste of the unique mix between the FLCL animation and the Pillows’ music.
Maybe by the time we visit Anime Expo 2017 next summer, Toonami and the FLCL crew will have lots more to share, including lots of new footage. One can dream.
