Some people will tell you it was Watchmen that caused them to start looking at comics in a more somber and serious tone. For me, it was a comic written by the same man who wrote Watchmen, only the one that changed my life was called The Killing Joke, and it was a Batman story quite unlike any I had read before. As you can tell from the dark tone of the trailer above, this is not your parent’s Batman (because your parents got shot in an alley behind a movie theater) and the heavy themes of abuse and death that run rampant through the story have landed the movie version an R-rating.
Yes, outside of the awful director’s cut of Dawn of Justice, this is the first Batman movie we are getting that is R-rated. And on top of that, it is a cartoon. When I heard this story was getting made into a DC animated feature I thought to myself ‘no way unless it lands n R-rating’ and when I saw this trailer I knew, they nailed it.
They even have the “one bad day” speech hinted at in the trailer, which is to say, the GREATEST Joker speech of all time. Really, I just said that. Also, Kevin Conroy (who does the BEST Batman voice ever) is coming back, and so is Hamill as The Joker. Joker Skywalker, to be exact.
All kidding aside, Hamill brings a special kind of madness to the clown prince of chaos and this trailer looks like it is an exact adaptation of the gut-wrenching graphic novel that stunned many. Get ready for the most divisive and polarizing ending in all of comics finally shown to all. It’s all in the name, people.
This is gonna be good, kiddies.
