I should note though, at least in the HTPC sector, a self built one is rarely less expensive than a commercial appliance… it’s the flexibility and feature set you self-build for, not the price. Of course, if you have a bunch of PC parts laying around already (and who doesn’t), that reduces the immediate expense a good bit.
