Darren Aronofsky can take boring topics, such as math (Pi) and turn them into genius works of cinematography, he’s also capable of taking characters on a journey into themselves, revealing their flaws, while humanizing their struggles (Requiem for a Dream). Now give him Wolverine and we might have the most twisted, revealing study in comic book characters ever created for the big screen.
According to Deadline:
On the X-Men: Wolverine 2 front, 20th Century Fox is between David Slade and Darren Aronofsky, I’m told. Slade, who just directed the summer hit The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, met over the weekend with Hugh Jackman on location where he is shooting Real Steel for DreamWorks. Aronofsky has also been talking with Jackman, and they have a good relationship that dates back to The Fountain, when Jackman stepped in after Brad Pitt dropped out.
There are naysayers who claim Aronofsky is just “too daring” for the role of director on a major motion picture conceived from a comic book, however his artistic direction and ability to expose all the flaws of his characters is exactly what Wolverine needs, after all I can barely think of a more confused, conflicted, flaw-ridden X-Men than Wolverine.
What do you think about Aronofsky as the films new director? Twilight: Eclipse wasn’t bad, but I want Wolverine to have some edge.
